Carlos Sanchez’ scouting report

Robbie Knopf:

White Sox prospect Carlos Sanchez, a 19 year old out of the Dominican Republic, has seen some time at shortstop , but having split time between shortstop and second base in his career, we’ll almost assuredly see him at second base in the Futures Game.  Sanchez, 5’11″, 175, isn’t the caliber of prospect of any of the players above, but he has promise and has been playing out of his mind in 2012. Sanchez features a compact swing with little power, but he hits a lot of line drives, mostly singles, and has the speed to beat out groundballs. Sanche also can bunt for base hits. Sanchez’s bat speed is average, but his pitch recognition has made serious progress and he draws a fair amount of walks. Sanchez is very fast, but he needs a ton of work reading pitchers on the basepaths, not only to steal bases but even to take extra-bases. His instincts on the bases simply aren’t there right now and he’s not nearly a good enough baserunner as he should be with his speed. Defensively, Sanchez is able to put his speed to better use, and he has soft hands with a strong arm, tools that have allowed him to see time at shortstop as well even though his future is at second base. Sanchez doesn’t have elite upside, but has room to grow in terms of hitting, his plate discipline, and especially on the basepaths. In 2012, Sanchez has really impressed offensively at High-A, posting a .325/.380/.405 line with 13 doubles, 3 triples, 1 homer, 33 RBI, and 13 of 24 steals. Sanchez has struck out 47 times versus 23 walks, and he has played 40 games at shortstop versus 29 at second base. Sanchez has been a breakout prospect for the White Sox this year, and it got him to Futures Game and we’ll see just how far it can get him.

Andre Rienzo suspended 50 games

Scott Merkin:

White Sox right-hander Andre Rienzo was one of two Minor League pitchers suspended for 50 games due to violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention Treatment Program, as announced by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball on Thursday.

Rienzo, a 23-year-old native of Sao Paolo, Brazil, came to the team as a free agent in 2006. He was 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA for Class A Winston-Salem as part of its 2012 starting rotation.

After the suspension was announced, for Rienzo testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance, the White Sox released a statement from Rienzo.

“I have been informed by Major League Baseball that I have tested positive for a prohibited substance, and as a result, I will be suspended for 50 games,” Rienzo said in the statement. “I want to make it clear to Major League Baseball and the Chicago White Sox that I have never intentionally taken a prohibited substance.

“Unfortunately, during the offseason, I used a dietary supplement that I purchased at a health food store in my home country of Brazil, believing it to be legitimate. It is now apparent that the supplement was tainted. I understand that I am responsible for what I put in my body, and therefore have accepted the 50-game suspension. I look forward to returning to the game I love, and I appreciate the support the Chicago White Sox have given me during this process.”

Kevin Goldstein on SS prospect Tyler Saladino

Goldstein @ BP:

Tyler Saladino, SS, White Sox (High-A Winston-Salem)

A seventh-round pick last year out of Oral Roberts, Saladino opened plenty of eyes after signing by hitting an impressive .309/.397/.442 in 47 Low-A games. A broken hand delayed his 2011 season, and there were worries that last summer was a fluke when he hit .182 in his first 20 Carolina League games. Since then, he’s back to being the player we saw last summer; with two home runs over the weekend, he’s hitting .329 in his last 18 games to up his season averages to .252/.333/.476. Beyond having well above-average power for a middle infielder, he’s also a legitimate shortstop who makes up for average range with instincts and fundamentals. He entered the year as my 12th-best prospect in a weak White Sox system, and he’ll surely get a full write-up this offseason.

And he’s doing this having a normal .294 BABIP. Last year his BABIP was an astronomical .412.

J.J. explains Phil Humber’s success [UPDATE]

Stankevitz @ BL:

Humber’s two best pitches this season have been his 12-6 curveball and his straight changeup. Since entering the rotation, he’s thrown his curveball on 24.6 percent of pitches; his changeup, 22.1 percent. Humber’s effectiveness with his curveball has been key in his turnaround, as it’s gone from a good to a great pitch. …

FutureSox’s Minor League preview

FutureSox:

The biggest surprise to me was Eduardo Escobar landing in AAA. The slick fielding shortstop played 49 games with the Barons last year and hit just .262 with an OPS south of .700. That said, he impressed Ozzie Guillen among others this spring.

Terry Doyle starts for Winston-Salem tonight while SBT favorite Andre Rienzo is also on the Winston-Salem’s starting pitching rotation:

On the mound, the Dash boasts a pair of top 30 prospects in the starting rotation. Brazilian right-hander Andre Rienzo was one of Kannapolis’ best starters last year, going 8-4 with a 3.65 ERA and holding opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last ten starts. Rienzo is ranked by Baseball America as the 25th best prospect in the White Sox farm system. RHP Cameron Bayne was 29th on that list after finishing 2010 12-9 with a 3.60 ERA and 101 strikeouts last season for the Intimidators. Bayne and Rienzo should be joined in the rotation by RHP Terry Doyle, LHP Hector Santiago, RHP Justin Collop, and possibly LHP Joe Serafin.
