More stats.

MLBTR:

Myers, 31, has a $10MM option for 2013 that will vest if he finishes 45 games and doesn’t end the season on the disabled list.  To date, the closer has finished 29 games with 35 appearances in total.
… If the Astros trade the 31-year-old to a team that uses him as a setup man, the option likely won’t vest. There’s a good chance Myers will finish 45 games if he continues closing, but one executive suggested to Morosi that the $10MM vesting option isn’t that scary to prospective trade partners. “I wouldn’t imagine it’s going to be a huge hindrance,” the person said.

Myers’ contract:

  • 2 years/$23M (2011-12), plus 2013 club option
    • signed extension with Houston 8/1/10, replacing option year of previous deal
    • $2M signing bonus
    • 11:$7M, 12:$11M, 13:$10M club option ($3M buyout)
    • 2013 option guaranteed based on 2012 games started (re-worked 2/12 to base vesting on 2012 games finished, reflecting change to closer’s role)
    • $1.5M in annual performance bonuses

CSN’s Chuck Garfien interviewed Jerry Reinsdorf. Here’s Reinsdorf’s comment on Mark Buehrle’s departure:

“Mark Buehrle was a pillar of this franchise. He was a cornerstone, he was here for a long time. He came out of nowhere. He was a 38th round draft choice. He did everything we ever asked for him. He caught all the first pitches, he threw a perfect game, a no-hitter. Anytime you needed him to go to a school or a hospital, or whatever, Mark Buehrle was always there. But the fact is at his age, it didn’t make sense for us to do what the Marlins were prepared to do for him. So he went, certainly with my blessing. I spoke to him and said, ‘You gotta take it. You gotta take this deal.’ And Mark said, ‘I’ll be back in 4 years.’”

Buehrle will be back? Is this meant to soothe Sox fans angry over Buehrle’s departure? Anyway, if the Sox won’t be competing in the immediate future, Buehrle’s talents would be wasted if he stayed here….

White Sox interested in LHRPs Mike Gonzalez, Arthur Rhodes

MLBTR:

The White Sox have shown interest in lefty relievers Mike Gonzalez and Arthur Rhodes, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.Gonzalez, a Scott Boras client, remains unsigned with the season a few weeks away.  Boras told me on Friday his client is “in play with a lot of teams right now,” and “sometimes late doesn’t mean demand, it just means choice.”  At this point, however, Gonzalez’s ability to secure a Major League deal is in jeopardy.  Last week, he turned down a minor league offer to return to the Rangers.  The White Sox currently have 37 players on their 40-man roster, so they could add Gonzalez without losing anyone.  Rhodes, 42, is more likely to settle for a minor league deal, in my opinion.  He aims to pitch one more season before retiring.

Heyman, also, reports that the Sox were interested in 3B Eric Chavez. Chavez re-signed with the Yankees. The Sox were “very interested” in Chavez last year. Maybe next year. Kenny always gets his man.

Twins assistant GM Rob Antony … said that some internet rumors about players on the trade market often lead to exploratory conversations between GMs about said players.  “There are a lot of names that pop up where we do a lot of that same thing. ‘Look, if you’re looking to move this guy, he could be a fit over here. I don’t know what’s fact and what’s rumor, but if you are serious in trading a player we’d like to be kept in mind, we have some interest,’ ” Antony said.

I’m hearing Boston will acquire RHP Gavin Floyd from the Sox for RHP Anthony Ranaudo and C Ryan Lavarnway.

Phil Rogers says Gavin Floyd isn’t the only White Sox player rumored to be traded to Boston:

With Eduardo Escobar already on the fringes of the big-league roster and Tyler Saladino on the horizon, why wouldn’t Ken Williams consider sending Ramirez and [Gavin] Floyd to Boston in a package for as much 25-and-under talent as possible?

One rumor bouncing around says Ramirez isn’t the White Sox regular the Red Sox are eyeing for the shortstop opening they created when they traded Marco Scutaro to the Rockies. It says they think Gordon Beckham is capable of regaining his ability as a run-producer and returning to the position he played at the University of Georgia.

Eduardo Escobar playing 2B? I don’t see this happening.

White Sox interested in Cuban LHP Gerardo Concepcion

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ January 14, 2012 9:10 pm

It’s not only Jorge Soler and Yoenis Cespedes on the White Sox radar. Phil Rogers writes:

Most expect Cespedes and Soler to go to the highest bidder, which is usually the case with Cuban players, but clearly the White Sox and Cubs are positioning themselves to sell the comfortable fit, not just the contract. Both organizations know other teams are prepared to extend themselves financially, as these are among the last significant pieces that can be acquired before international signing limits kick in this summer.

… A major league source said the White Sox also join the Cubs in pursuing left-hander Gerardo Concepcion. He was Rookie of the Year in Serie Nacional last year but hasn’t had as much international experience as Soler, Belaguert and Martinez. He’s considered a finesse pitcher but has succeeded with his command.

The 18-year old Concepcion pitched 101.2 innings in the 2010-11 season. He allowed 103 hits, had a 53/43 K/BB ratio, and a 3.36 ERA. He had a 10-3 record in 21 starts.

Will the Sox go after Yoennis Cespedes?

Bruce Levine:

After trading both Carlos Quentin and Sergio Santos, the Chicago White Sox have cleared some payroll, upwards of $10 million off their 2012 salary base. That money may be used to bid on 26-year-old Cespedes or 19-year-old Jorge Soler, also a multi-talented Cuban defector, but White Sox general manager Kenny Williams was reluctant to say how far in the White Sox are in relationship to the Cuban free agents.

Scott Merkin:

“What I will say is that there are some doors now open for us that were not open just yesterday because of savings of dollars,” Williams said. “But which direction we are heading with that, it would be counterproductive in getting something done to say we are deciding to go down that road. So we can take some of that little bit of payroll we cleared and invest it in something that helps the Major League club now, or something that helps on the horizon with another prospect. We could end up making this a 3-for-1 deal instead of a 2-for-1, albeit with two guys we really like.”

Well, with teams like the Yankee$, the Red Sox, the new Marlins, and the Cubs involved I think we can be pretty sure the Sox won’t land Cespedes. Kenny will only kick the tires. Probably…

Richard Griffin @ The Toronto Star:

Anthopoulos began serious trade talks at the winter meetings and is now ready to resume calling GMs in earnest now that he knows the Darvish negotiations are off the table for the Jays.

There are talks with White Sox GM Kenny Williams for outfielder Carlos Quentin and John Danks. There’s a call to be made to Billy Beane with imaginative back-and-forth involving lefthander Gio Gonzalez. How about the Astros and Wandy Rodriguez or the Braves and Jair Jurrjens?

Maybe another team can be enticed to join in on one of these trade talks, brought in to create some heavy three-way action, because Anthopoulos is always prepared, armed with knowledge of all 30 teams, not just his own. He does his serious legwork and likes to know what other teams are looking for even if he doesn’t have the parts to satisfy them. That’s where the creativity and imagination come in.

Is another trade with Toronto coming?

Chuck Garfien:

“It is the start of a rebuilding and you guys know that I’ve not used that word in 12 years, but it is the start of rebuilding now,” Williams told reporters. “Is it the start of a falling domino-type of rebuilding? No, absolutely not, because as we currently sit here I do not like what’s currently being offered for our valuable pieces. So I’m of the mindset that while we may do a couple more things, as we sit here right now we’ll probably keep the rest of the pitching intact.”

That means John Danks and Gavin Floyd are safe…for now.

UPDATE: Doug Padilla:

“Because as we currently sit, I do not like what is currently being offered for any of our valuable veteran pieces. I’m of the mindset that while we may do a couple of more things, as we sit right now we’ll probably keep the rest of the pitching intact and we’ll focus on some peripheral things to kind of continue to get a piece here or there that will help us in 2013, 2014. But as I sit here right now I don’t see any deals for any of the other pitchers.”

… What it shows is that the Sox will probably wait until C.J. Wilson and Mark Buehrle are off the market to make a move. When they do sign, more teams will likely be interested in trading for Danks (or Gavin Floyd), thus upping the potential return.

Yeah, Kenny will probably wait if he intends to trade Danks or Floyd. Except if he gets an offer too good too pass up. Or if they hypnotize him and we get a repeat of Swisher II…

The K/BB ratio isn’t anything special. Don’t let the Yankee mystique influence you Kenny.

The Daily News indicates the Yankees may be interested in trading for the Cubs’ Matt Garza, but are unwilling to move blue chip prospects like Jesus Montero or Manny Banuelos for him. The New York Post also notes that the Yankees could consider dealing Dellin Betances to the White Sox for John Danks.

Here are Betances’ AA and AAA stats:

Hmm, a 2.3 K/BB ratio and 1.476 WHIP AA pitcher for Johnnie Danks? No thanks. Terry Doyle’s AA numbers were a 3.32 K/BB ratio and a 1.130 WHIP and the Sox left him unprotected in the Rule V draft.

Ask for 19-year old catcher Gary Sanchez to give them John Danks Kenny.
