Gordon Beckham changes his at-bat song

The new at-bat song is a Paul Konerko suggestion: Metallica’s ‘Seek & Destroy. ‘ Beckham wanted to go song-less:

Ozzie Guillen thought Beckham’s previous at-bat song, The Outfield’s ‘Your Love’, wasn’t ‘Chicago Tough’:

“(‘Your Love’) is a romantic song,” Guillen said. “You need to pick a song that’s tough.”

he added:

“I don’t know how people (decide) when they’re going to change what kind of music they’re playing. When Babe Ruth hit, and all those guys were playing, they didn’t have a sound system in the stadium, and they had like 4,000 hits. I think the last thing Paul Molitor and all those Hall of Famers worried about was what kind of music was playing.”

but if Beckham starts hitting things change:

“If he’s going to start hitting, I’ll bring the band. I’ll pay every day for them to have a concert for him,” said a smiling Guillen. … “But … I would bring Michael Jackson back to life. I would have a concert every day and fire all the coaches.”

UPDATE: Michael and the band are coming!

Ozzie Guillen doesn’t want ‘Your Love’

Scot Gregor:

Guillen is not too crazy about the song that plays when Beckham comes to the plate: “Your Love” by The Outfield. But everything else appears copacetic. “I think the stupid song they play when he hits is kind of a phony song, but a lot of people, when you look up, they’re singing it,” Guillen said. “You’re not going to be popular unless you produce. “Hopefully this kid can keep it up and make sure this thing doesn’t go to his brains and to his head and all of a sudden he starts walking high. Make sure he’s low-key.”

Do you know Gordon Beckham owns the MLB rights to ‘Your Love’ by ‘The Outfield’?

Just ask other major leaguers. Kelly Johnson, on the Braves, recently switched to The Outfield after earning a blessing from Beckham, who, apparently, owns the MLB rights to the song. (If song-granting permission is anything like the art of swapping jersey numbers, Beckham could have earned some serious swag from Johnson. Like Outfield concert tickets, or something.) Rumor has it Eric Byrnes also uses “Your Love,” but he never talked with Rabbi Beckham, who assured reporters that “he was going to investigate.”

Tyler Flowers wants ‘Your Love’ too.

Gordon Beckham adjusting to the big leagues

“I made some adjustments, loosening up my hands so I wouldn’t put as much stress on my shoulders. It was all a mind thing. If you don’t have a strong mind or will, this game will bury you pretty quick.”

White Sox hitting coach Greg Walker said those adjustments were not “technical” in nature, but related to how he was expending himself.

“He was playing college ball at this time last year, and he came up here in the middle of some of the most intense games we’ll probably play all year,” Walker said. “We just told him to relax more because he was too tight, and the effort level was too high. Nobody was panicking, and we weren’t about to change anything because we had plenty of confidence in him. …

From Beckham’s FutureSox interview:

Why do you have Your Love by The Outfield play when you come to bat?

Great question. Your love by the Outfield is my favorite song. I like to have a song that lights me up inside. I like a song that gets me excited and ready, but keeps me relaxed at the same time. I chose that song when I was a freshman in college and used it for three years. That song has kind of attached itself to me and the University of Georgia. I get messages late at night from friends who hear it in the bar and call me just to tell me it’s on. I’ve walked into places in Athens where they would see me and then play the song. And the girls enjoyed it too. They would actually finish the verse when it would cut off when I stepped into the box. Best of both worlds I guess.

Here’s Beckham’s song (Youtube)
