Return in Ozzie Guillen trade probably not Logan Morrison; UPDATE: Return will be two minor leaguers?

Jon Heyman:

Ozzie Guillen is close to becoming the manager of the Marlins.

A deal between the teams is at hand.

… It appears [Logan] Morrison is not part of the current deal.

Maybe 20-year old Class-A+ prospect LHP Chad James?

UPDATE: Bruce Levine reports that:

Should Guillen take a managerial job with a different organization in 2012, the White Sox retain the right to be compensated. In order to fulfill that right, the Marlins will send two minor leaguers to Chicago, the source said.

Tie goes to Kenny [Williams]

Brett Ballantini:

… If there is a choice, Williams will be safe — every opportunity Reinsdorf has had to choose between coaches and GMs in his past (including the Bulls) indicates that the tie goes to the executive suite.

But there won’t be a choice made. Reinsdorf will deal not ultimatums but urgency — everyone, including the White Sox roster — is getting older. Win now, whatever it takes. Otherwise, the housecleaning that was warranted in 2012 will come in 2013.

Meanwhile, Logan Morrison filed a grievance against the Marlins over his demotion to the minors last month:

“I’m doing this because I’m standing up for what’s right,” Morrison told ESPN.com this week. “If I thought it was because of my performance on the field, then I wouldn’t be filing a grievance.”

So, Guillen for Morrison? NBC Hardtalk’s Matthew Poulliot says such a swap won’t happen:

The funny thing is that if the Marlins made such a trade, it’d be because of Morrison’s big mouth. And there’s maybe just one character in baseball with a bigger mouth than Morrison…

But it’s ridiculous speculation, and it’s never going to happen. Morrison is a 24-year-old with a .263/.354/.457 line and 21 homers in 665 major league at-bats. He’s five seasons away from free agency, and it’s not a stretch to suggest he could be worth $50 million in those five seasons, all while getting paid maybe 60 percent of that. He’s not getting traded for a manager. The end.

Will Kenny Williams try to trade for Logan Morrison? [UPDATE]

Capozzi @ PBP:

[T]he Marlins made two moves that shocked the clubhouse Saturday night: They optioned left fielder Logan Morrison to the minors and released veteran infielder Wes Helms. Morrison said he was stunned by the news and suggested his demotion and Helms’ release had something to do with an off-field incident on which he refused to elaborate. “I’m heartbroken and I’m disappointed,’ Morrison said, his voice shaking. “I asked for an explanation and the one I got was I was hitting .240 I don’t know if that makes any sense to me or to you guys but. All I know is I go out and I give everything for this team. I play hurt, I play through injury and this is how you get treated. It doesn’t seem very fair or right to me.’ Morrison, who is batting .249 with 17 homers and 60 RBI, has been outspoken about moves the front office has made. Both he and Helms have been critical about teammate Hanley Ramirez …

Before the game, Morrison spent a good half hour sitting in the dugout talking to General Manager Mike Hill while the Giants took batting practice. “Right now I just feel resentment and anger,’ Morrison said after the game. “Stand up for what’s right and this happens.’ …

One team source believes the team the team is sending a message, “To me it’s a lesson, concentrate on the game and stop trying to be so funny.”

Remember last year the Sox wanted a Florida player for Ozzie Guillen? That player was rumored to be Logan Morrison.

And here are Morrison’s stats:

UPDATE: Morrison is considering filing a grievance:

Logan Morrison plans to consult the player’s union to see if he has any grounds for a grievance against the Marlins for optioning him late Saturday to Class AAA New Orleans.

“We are going to, with absolute certainty, explore this and contact the union and make sure Logan’s rights are protected,’’ said Fred Wray, Morrison’s agent. “It doesn’t seem like everything adds up here.’’

Hardball Talk’s Drew Silva:

But the fact that LoMo is upset enough to consider the action, and not comfortable enough to settle matters behind closed doors, tells you something about the crumbling relationship between player and management.

Reinsdorf confirms asking Florida for a player to give them Ozzie Guillen

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ November 17, 2010 2:42 am

Wittenmyer @ CST:

Reinsdorf, in Orlando on the eve of owners meetings, … confirmed for the first time a Sun-Times report last month that he was willing to let the Florida Marlins interview Guillen for their manager vacancy in exchange for a high-level player.

”The Marlins asked for permission to talk to Ozzie, and we told them we’d let Ozzie go if they gave us a particular player,” Reinsdorf told the Sun-Times. ”But we knew they couldn’t give us the player.”

Sources told the Sun-Times the player was touted young slugger Mike Stanton, but Reinsdorf said it wasn’t Stanton. He declined to identify the player, but speculation points to first baseman Logan Morrison.

”We were never going to let Ozzie go, but if they would have given us this particular player,” he said, ”I would have let anybody go. … Everybody is available at a price. The only player I had that wasn’t available was Michael Jordan.”

Don’t miss the last line!

UPDATE: Buford nailed it in his October 29 comment:

Here’s the key sentence in KW’s response “That’s tampering. All I can say is the report isn’t COMPLETELY accurate.” This leads to the obvious question “Which part of the report is accurate and which part is not?” I would think the following is true (1) the Marlins want Guillen and (2) the Sox will let Guillen go, but only if compensated. The Stanton give-up may be the inaccuracy, but other players may also have been discussed.

With the Sox need for LHH and Konerko’s possible departure, Florida 1B prospect Logan Morrison would be a wonderful addition.
