The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Tony Pena from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor-league infielder Brandon Allen. Pena, 27, is 5-3 with a 4.24 ERA (16 ER/34.0 IP) and one save in 37 relief appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2009. He leads the club with eight holds and ranks second in games pitched. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder is 16-13 with a 4.08 ERA (101 ER/222.2 IP), seven saves and 63 holds in 209 career relief outings with Arizona (2006-09). He has limited right-handers to a .224 (100-447) lifetime average and ranks fourth among all major-league relievers since 2007 with 61 holds. Pena’s best season came in 2007 when he went 5-4 with a 3.27 ERA (31 ER/85.1 IP), two saves and 30 holds in 75 appearances. He limited the opposition to just 63 hits and a .207 average in his second major-league season.

whitesox.com adds that:

Pena likely will be used as insurance behind White Sox relievers Octavio Dotel and Scott Linebrink, giving the team another late-inning right-hander.

MLBTR points us to Pena’s .352 BABIP for this year.

SoxMachine’s Birmingham & Charlotte Minor League roundup

Dayan Viciedo is improving:

Viciedo’s numbers still aren’t impressive on the whole, but he’s making every necessary improvement right now.  Last month, it was all about the quality of his contact.  This time around, it’s his walks and strikeouts.  Check it out:

* April: 2 BB, 19 K
* May: 3 BB, 23 K
* June: 9 BB, 11 K

He also topped .400 in slugging for the first time in a month (.426), along with his career high in OBP (.342).  He’s still committing plenty of errors, but the Sox paid him to hit, and he’s following the correct curve right now.

BTW,  Jhonny Nunez was promoted to Charlotte.

Herald Online:

Allen could have plenty of time in Triple A to develop. He knows he still has things to learn. Some of those lessons will undoubtedly come from Knights manager Chris Chambliss, a Gold Glove winner at first base in 1978, who enjoyed a 17-year major league career.

“Chambliss worked with me in spring training on picks at first base. I took to him. I hope he took to me,” Allen said. “I try to learn something new every year to improve my game. This year I’m learning to just have fun and relax.”

Chambliss is getting reacquainted with his new first baseman.

“Allen just got to us. He is a mature kid and that gets recognized. I think the organization knew he was mentally ready to move up. He has worked hard on his defense and has made tremendous improvement,” Chambliss said. …
