MLBTR:

Myers, 31, has a $10MM option for 2013 that will vest if he finishes 45 games and doesn’t end the season on the disabled list.  To date, the closer has finished 29 games with 35 appearances in total.
… If the Astros trade the 31-year-old to a team that uses him as a setup man, the option likely won’t vest. There’s a good chance Myers will finish 45 games if he continues closing, but one executive suggested to Morosi that the $10MM vesting option isn’t that scary to prospective trade partners. “I wouldn’t imagine it’s going to be a huge hindrance,” the person said.

Myers’ contract:

  • 2 years/$23M (2011-12), plus 2013 club option
    • signed extension with Houston 8/1/10, replacing option year of previous deal
    • $2M signing bonus
    • 11:$7M, 12:$11M, 13:$10M club option ($3M buyout)
    • 2013 option guaranteed based on 2012 games started (re-worked 2/12 to base vesting on 2012 games finished, reflecting change to closer’s role)
    • $1.5M in annual performance bonuses

Blair Walters (W, 2-2) 7.0 1 0 0 0 9 0 2.84
Bryan Blough 2.0 0 0 0 1 1 0 4.41

WP: Walters.
HBP: Duffy (by Walters).
Groundouts-flyouts: Walters 6-6, Blough 4-1.
Batters faced: Walters 23, Blough 7.

Walters, who has a 47 K / 11 BB ratio in 44.1 innings (8 games):

“By far this was the best outing I’ve had in my pro career,” said Walters.

“It almost felt like it was easy today, I just felt good. I was locating pitches when I needed to, definitely got in that rhythm and felt better than I had in any other starts.”

“Last time I went six and felt confident out there,” said Walters. “I was building off that, seeing what I can do with myself and trust myself.”

“I used my changeup a lot,” he said. “I was able to establish the fastball inside and locate that pretty well on both corners and go from there, so I could throw the changeup and get groundouts, swings-and-misses.”

“It definitely was nice [to pitch that deep into a game],” he said. “It was one of those nights you wish you could go all nine, but it felt good to go seven and help the team to a victory. The defense was good and the offense was there tonight. I was feeling good.”

John Sickels’ Top 20 White Sox prospects for 2012

John Sickels:

1) Nestor Molina, RHP, Grade B+: Acquired from the Blue Jays for Sergio Santos, and immediately became Chicago’s first or second-best prospect. I think he can remain a starter. Molina was a big topic of discussion earlier this month.

2) Addison Reed, RHP, Grade B+: The best closer prospect in baseball thanks to superior command of 93-97 MPH fastball and devastating slider. You can make a case to rank him ahead of Molina, if you think Molina will be a reliever.

3) Tyler Saladino, SS, Grade C+: 2010 seventh round pick out of Oral Roberts developed from draft sleeper into solid prospect. Good power for a middle infielder, and has some idea about the strike zone, scouts like his work ethic. Main issue now is if he can stick at shortstop, and I think he has a decent chance to do so.

4) Trayce Thompson, OF, Grade C+: Highest-ceiling bat in system, tapping into his power now and making good progress on defense. Kills lefties but has serious contact problems against right-handed pitching. Struck out 172 times while repeating Low-A. Has the tools to be a star slugger but also carries a high risk of failure.

5) Hector Santiago, LHP, Grade C+: Came out of nowhere to reach the majors (briefly) in 2011 thanks to development of a new screwball to go with 90-95 MPH fastball. Third pitch still needs work and it is unclear if he starts or relieves in the long run, although recent rumors indicate the Sox will continue to start him. Projects as number three/four starter if third pitch develops, or a power relief arm.

The best closer prospect in baseball” comment helps explain Sergio Santos’ trade.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX: I already mentioned catcher Kevan Smith a few days ago, so today I’ll bring up lefty Blair Walters, drafted in the 11th round from the University of Hawaii. He went 9-0, 4.03 in the Pioneer League with a sharp 72/17 K/BB in 74 innings. He has a low-90s sinker and is tough on lefties, but was mostly a reliever in college and is still polishing his breaking ball and changeup. He could develop into a fourth starter or possibly a LOOGY.

BTW, here’s the Kevan Smith mention:

Kevan Smith, C, White Sox: Seventh round pick in 2011 from University of Pittsburgh, annihilated short-season pitching at Bristol (Appy League, .396/.482/.740) and Great Falls (Pioneer League, .318/.417/.523). Drew 28 walks against just 30 strikeouts in 203 at-bats. Power bat and physical strength are well-respected, but he needs more polish with defense, and at age 23 he needs to show this wasn’t just a fluke generated against younger competition.
