John Danks down, Jose Quintana up

whitesox.com:

John Danks will be placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday’s series opener against the Indians, and Jose Quintana will be called from Triple-A Charlotte to temporarily take Danks’ spot in the rotation.

Danks, 27, felt out-of-the-ordinary soreness in the sub scapular area, which is the back of his left shoulder, when he tried playing catch Sunday after throwing 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a Saturday victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The durable starter talked to general manager Ken Williams, manager Robin Ventura and head athletic trainer Herm Schneider, and after a MRI was done on Thursday, they decided the best course of action was a safe one for a pitcher who had one previous DL trip last season with a strained right oblique.

… A trip to the disabled list, retroactive to his start against the Cubs on Saturday, means Danks will miss the Indians and then the series finale at Tampa Bay on May 30. If all goes well, Danks will be eligible to return on a June 4 off-day and then would face the Blue Jays at home on June 5 without any Minor League rehab work needed.

Here are Quintana’s minor-league stats over the last 2 years:

Brent Morel down, Orlando Hudson up

whitesox.com:

The White Sox completed the signing of recently released veteran infielder Orlando Hudson to a one-year deal on Tuesday. The parties initially agreed to the contract on Sunday.

Chicago placed third baseman Brent Morel, who has a lumbar back strain, on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Friday.

Hudson, who will wear jersey No. 5, is expected to be in the mix to play third base, manager Robin Ventura said Sunday. Hudson has never played third base at the Major League level and hasn’t played there since 2001, when he was with Triple-A Syracuse in the Toronto organization. He could also fill in at second base, where he made 33 starts with San Diego this season, Ventura said.

I like how the ‘he hasn’t played 3B since 2001 at AAA’ thing is kinda glossed over! Shows the lack of any good options in the minors.

Scott Merkin:

Infielder Orlando Hudson, who was released on May 17 by the Padres, has agreed to terms with the White Sox but has not signed officially, according to a source close to the situation. MLB.com’s Peter Gammons first reported Hudson joining the White Sox earlier Saturday evening.

Hudson, 34, will be playing for his fifth team since 2008 and brings a .276 career average and .343 on-base percentage. Hudson will play some third base and back up Gordon Beckham at second base, having turned down a chance to play regularly elsewhere in order to join the White Sox in this role.

In 1,294 career games over 11 seasons, Hudson has played no other defensive position but second base. He hit .211 over 123 at-bats for the Padres this past season.

Since Hudson was released, the Sox will pay the pro-rated portion of the minimum salary. The minimum salary is $480,000 And the last time Hudson played 3B was 11 years ago in the minor-leagues (AAA).

“By far this was the best outing I’ve had in my pro career,” said Walters.

“It almost felt like it was easy today, I just felt good. I was locating pitches when I needed to, definitely got in that rhythm and felt better than I had in any other starts.”

“Last time I went six and felt confident out there,” said Walters. “I was building off that, seeing what I can do with myself and trust myself.”

“I used my changeup a lot,” he said. “I was able to establish the fastball inside and locate that pretty well on both corners and go from there, so I could throw the changeup and get groundouts, swings-and-misses.”

“It definitely was nice [to pitch that deep into a game],” he said. “It was one of those nights you wish you could go all nine, but it felt good to go seven and help the team to a victory. The defense was good and the offense was there tonight. I was feeling good.”

From his CTL interview:

Q: Hey Chris Redman so from the Tribune. Don Cooper gets a lot of credit. Four. Resurrecting some careers and developing young guys like Q — what — specifically are some of the things that that he emphasizes. With you and and another — young pitchers.

A: I mean the biggest part for me is is that the mentality of it you know he he stresses the mentality of pitching. You know also working with me — just different things you know get — letter back to where it needs to be. I’m trying to develop — fourth pitch that and cutter. You know he’s been all fastball command has just order. You know you gotta you gotta love the off your fastball on me that that really sets the tone for your game and — good fastball command and you know good feel for your secondary pitches you can. You know go out there and pretty much compete with anybody. And good job of loved having him as a as a pitching coach and you know I’m I’m I’m very excited with the time I’ve had with them in — in the time that you know what happened with.

Tip of the hat to James for the link. Check out his post.

Sale couldn’t find the plate and threw only 2 of his first 11 pitches for strikes. He threw 23 of the 46 pitches in the first inning  for strikes. After the first inning things were much better but the offense decided to take the night off.

In his first 5 starts Sale averaged 92.35, 91.60, 93.44, 94.35, 94.26 (last to first start) mph on his two-seamer. So, today velocity was down. The game started 1 hour later than scheduled due to a rain-delay, and the air was pretty dump. Sale, also, threw 19 sliders tonight. Number of sliders in his first 5 starts: 23, 28, 49, 18, 31 (last to first start).
