Padilla @ ESPN:

… Cooper is optimistic that Jake Peavy will be able to return by Opening Day, although some conservative estimates have his 2011 debut pushed back as far as mid-May. And what if Peavy isn’t ready when the season starts?

“We will be able to get somebody that will do what we need them to do until Peavy is ready,” Cooper said. “I remember the days when we had to find a No. 3, 4 and 5 starter. We will be able to get somebody.”

Since Cooper doesn’t make final player personnel decisions, he is looking at in-house candidates to bridge the gap until Peavy’s return. He named Charlie Leesman, Lucas Harrell and Tony Pena as starting candidates. …

Cooper doesn’t like the idea of shifting Chris Sale from the rotation to the bullpen during the season.

  1. are the sox looking to trade starting pitching now. and if so, for what?

    • I don’t think so. Trading pitching will weaken the team a lot since there aren’t any good alternatives. And I don’t think Sale can be a part of the starting rotation in 2011.

but, as Buford says, if Danks doesn’t sign an extension, look out

      • It was just a thought because we have a lot of potential young pitchers, we could trade someone like danks or Jackson for something big. personally I think that we should keep who we have and develop the younger pitchers to be starters in future seasons

        • yeah, like you say:

          1. they’re young. so if you do a trade now you weaken the 2011 team.

          2. they’ve potential. they’re no sure thing!

          • do you see danks and or jackson getting contract extensions anytime soon? I like what jackson did last season in limited starts with the sox. and danks keeps getting better.

            • I’d love to see danks and jackson sign extensions but things are tricky. I’d say there is a 50-60% chance danks signs and a 20-25% chance jackson signs. I’d like jackson to recognize the success he showed under coop, but I’d not bet on it. and the Sox have been trying to sign danks but it seems he prefers to go year-by-year.
