Rosenthal @ FS:

The White Sox are checking into free-agent closer Rafael Soriano, yet another indication they may trade or non-tender Bobby Jenks. The Rays figure to lose Soriano and several of their other relievers as free agents and lack the flexibility to buy comparable replacements.

Soriano is a type-A free agent. The White Sox have the 23rd pick in the 2011 draft, which is unprocteted and will be given to the Rays if the Sox sign Soriano (provided the Rays offer him arbitration and he declines).

Soriano’s salary was $6.35 million in 2009 and $7.35 million in 2010.

  1. The Sox have cheap alternatives in Thornton, Sale and Santos. Also, KW could just re-sign Putz and not lose a draft choice. The Sox giving up their 1st round pick AND adding $8MM or so to their payroll for each of the next 2 or 3 years makes no sense at all.
