Tadahito talks baseball playoffs

Tadahito Iguchi, who has won titles in the U.S. and Japan, says you got to take advantage of a your first scoring chance and get momentum in a playoff game:

“You’ve got to capitalize on the first opportunity you get in a game, that’s the No. 1 priority,” Iguchi said before Game 2 of the Japan Series at Nagoya Dome on Sunday.

“And also, you want to try to reduce mistakes as much as you can.

“It’s so difficult to have a big lead in this kind of stage. So you can grab momentum by giving your opponent (some) damage first.”

speaking of tadahito, remember this?

Kenny Williams would trade Carlos Quentin+ for Colby Rasmus [UPDATE]

Cowley @ CST:

According to a major-league scout [Kenny] Williams has targeted talented but headline-making Colby Rasmus of the St.Louis Cardinals and is willing to part with a package that includes outfielder Carlos Quentin.

”It was obvious that [the Cardinals] were paying extra attention to Quentin at the end of the season, so this might have been something that was already talked about,” the scout said.

Yeah, I would too but St. Louis has to agree and I don’t think they will. Just because the White Sox gave away Nick Swisher for a bucket of balls a substandard return, doesn’t mean the Cardinals will do the same.

UPDATE: A second look at Rasmus’ stats raises some red flags: a 32% K%, and a .354 BABIP (and a -9 UZR/150) in 2010. Jeffrey Gross at THT calculates Rasmus’ xBABIP at .315 so there is a 39 point difference between Rasmus BABIP and xBABIP. In fact, Rasmus had the 7th higher BABIP-xBABIP in MLB.

The K% and the high BABIP don’t look good.

Goldstein @ BP:

Eduardo Escobar, SS, White Sox (AFL: Sagauros): 2-for-4, 3B, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB, K. The more scouts see him, the more there is too like with plus defense and enough hitting ability to play every day.

UPDATE: Goldstein, also, twitted:

Scout [in Arizona] also confirmed man-crush of White Sox SS Eduardo Escobar. “Real skills on both sides of the ball”

Very similar things to what Buford reported on his post yesterday.

The White Sox wanted to trade Ozzie Guillen for Mike Stanton? [UPDATE #3]

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ October 29, 2010 12:04 pm
Tags: , , , ,

DeLuca @ CST: (via MLBTR):

Guillen confirmed before Game 2 of the World Series that after his relationship with general manager Ken Williams reached a boiling point late this summer, the Florida Marlins were granted permission by the White Sox to interview Guillen — their former bench coach — for their vacant managerial job.

According to major-league sources, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was intent on making Guillen his next manager. Talks, sources say, progressed to the point that there was discussion of executing a trade that would send Guillen, who has a year left on his contract, to the Marlins for 20-year-old outfielder Mike Stanton, who hit 22 home runs and knocked in 59 runs in just 100 games as a rookie this season.

After Guillen met with chairman Jerry Reinsdorf late in the season and agreed to return to the Sox in 2011 — but not getting a desired extension — the Marlins talks died, sources say.

To the Sox FO: You don’t get players like Mike Stanton like this. Mike Stanton is worth much much more than Ozzie Guillen.

UPDATE: Marlins sources are denying that they had such talks (MLBTR). And a source told MLB.com that such talks “never happened” too.

UPDATE #2: Mark Gonzales reports a source familiar with the Marlins’ situation confirmed that the Marlins asked for permission to talk to Ozzie, but the Sox wanted player compensation and the Marlins didn’t receive permission.

UPDATE #3: Kenny Williams confirms Gonzales’ story:

According to a high-ranking White Sox source, the Marlins called and inquired about Guillen and the White Sox demanded compensation just to talk with him, with one year still remaining on Guillen’s contract. The two teams never came to an agreement over the compensation, with Stanton not serving as any sort of talking point, so official permission was never given to the Marlins to talk to Guillen.

Jared Mitchell says his ankle is 99% of the way to full strength

Gonzales:

“It’s about 99 percent right now,” Mitchell, the White Sox’s first round pick in the 2009 draft, said Thursday. “The rest of it is stuff you really can’t see from the outside looking in. It’s stuff I can feel. It’s just strengthening. I’ll be 100 percent by the time spring training rolls around. It’s doing good right now.”

“Making turns are pretty good,” Mitchell said. “The only thing that bothers me a little bit is making a left-hand turn. I get a little bit of pain on the outside of my ankle. It’s just working through that. It’s getting better every day.

“I haven’t lost any speed. Everything will be fine. Right now my focus is getting at-bats, getting a chance to play and get acclimated to the game again.”

Dick Allen wasn’t a batting practice guy

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ October 27, 2010 8:04 pm

Two quotes on Dick Allen from George Castle’s book ‘When the Game Changed’:

Former White Sox 3B-man Bill Melton:

It was his MO (skipping batting practice). If the game started at 7:30, he got there a quarter to 7, 7 o’clock. He never took batting practice. When he did get there an hour early, he always liked to take ground balls at second base, shortstop, any place but first base. He actually had terrific hands. This guy was a terrific first baseman.

and manager Chuck Tanner:

Nobody had to take batting practice if they could hit like him. (Bleep), he used to sit in the dugout with a bat and not take it. Before 9 o’clock at night, he hit more home runs than anyone in baseball. I talked to him all the time. He said, ‘Y’know, this batting practice, you got guys throwing 40 mph, it throws my timing off.’ I said I don’t care if you do. I witnessed him hitting left-handed in BP.

and another quote from Chuck Tanner:

I don’t know why (Allen is not in the Hall). He’s the best player I ever managed, that carried the team by himself.

White Sox want Chris Sale to add a pitch

Handel @ N-P:

The White Sox would like Sale to add a three-finger fastball to his repertoire. If he can master that pitch, he may find a regular spot in the rotation.”

They said if we have to send you back to the pen, we will,” he said.

Is the cutter considered a three-finger fastball?
