Did the White Sox claim Manny Ramirez? Is a deal close?

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ August 25, 2010 6:55 pm

Ginetti @ CST:

The White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers may be closing in on a deal to send Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez to the South Side in exchange for minor league prospects.

The deal appeared to be close Wednesday when reports surfaced that Ramirez was claimed by the Sox on waivers.

… The Dodgers appeared to be trying to negotiate a trade instead of allowing Ramirez to be claimed outright without compensation, with the Sox having only to pay his remaining salary.

UPDATE #1: Mark Gonzales says that according to a Dodgers source “the Dodgers are very eager to move Ramirez.”

UPDATE #2: Dylan Hernandez (LA Times) tweets that he’s hearing the same: that the Sox  and Dodgers are talking trade. And Bob Nightengale (USA Today) tweets that Manny has let it be known, through his friends, that he’ll accept a trade to the Sox.

UPDATE #3: Bruce Levine (ESPN) says a Major League source shot down the CST report, that the Sox and Dodgers are working on a deal, since all MLB teams have until Friday to claim or not Manny.

Dodgers place Manny Ramirez on waivers; may want prospect(s) back

Levine @ ESPN:

Outfielder Manny Ramirez has been placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers, sources tell ESPN.com.

Teams will have until Friday afternoon to put in a claim on Ramirez. Any team that’s awarded the claim would have until Tuesday afternoon to work out a trade with the Dodgers and, because Ramirez has a full no-trade clause, get his approval to waive that clause and accept a deal.

Teams are not convinced the Dodgers would dump Ramirez’s contract on any club that claims him. The Dodgers, rather, are likely to explore a trade in which they pick up some of the money but receive a prospect or prospects in return, sources tell ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark.

Stats: B-R, FG

If Jerry comes up with the dough, go for it Kenny! But not if ‘If Jerry comes up with the dough’ means taking the money from the already low draft budget.

I just wish the Sox, and not the Twins, had Jim Thome from Day 1.

Kenny Williams on getting bullpen help

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ August 25, 2010 11:35 am

“You’re not going to get bullpen help. Forget about that. Anyone who goes in anyone’s pen now is going to be someone that is on a one-year contract. No one is going to let anyone go who is producing that is on a multiyear contract because they’re going to need him for their pen next year. You’re going to get somebody who is high-priced who is not performing. Well, be careful when you put that claim in because you might end up getting it. And then you take a look at the possibilities out there and you weigh them against what you already have? You go, hmmm. We already have better in-house. So we’ve got what we got.”
