Pitch Type LWTS correspond to how many runs were likely to score on a particular pitch based on average run expectancy when each pitch was thrown and what happened as a result. Negative scores indicate more effective pitches.

Time to Plate is the time, in seconds, that it takes an average pitch of this type to reach the plate. This is strongly correlated with velocity, but also factors in movement.

What the hell?

After having a line drive turned into a double play and watching Ichiro Suzuki jump over the right-field fence to take away a home run Monday, Mark Kotsay and his White Sox teammates went a non-traditional direction Tuesday to bring the left-handed hitter some luck on offense.

They set up a fire pit during batting practice and burned his bats, in a salute to Pedro Cerrano from the movie “Major League.” According to Kotsay, the ritual was executed by Mark Teahen.

“I walked out and saw what was going on, and obviously I wanted to find out what was going on, but I had nothing to do with it,” Kotsay said. “There are quirky things like changing your uniform or your undershirt or your shoes, but never burning bats.”

Sickels:

… So what’s going on? He’s still throwing 90-95 MPH, so it is not a problem with velocity. He has a wide arsenal of pitches, still using a curveball, changeup, splitter, and slider once again, although he’s not using the slider nearly as often this season and is relying more on the splitter. The ERAs and hit rates have been ugly, although his FIP and xFIP marks have been much better at 4.41 and 4.21 in his career.

The Big Teacher?

Thomas, the greatest hitter in  Sox’s history, said he’s always lent his advice to the Sox’s hitters.

“I always give advice to hitters,” Thomas said. “The last five years of my career I helped a lot of young guys. It’s a growing process. I understand it now. My first 10 years it was hard to do that because I was so focused and driven. But as time wore on, I did realize that young guys do need a little help because it’s a transition from Triple-A to the major leagues.”

Big Frank was named a White Sox ambassador today.

“I’ve been pretty much told that I will be OK and will be in a White Sox uniform after July 31,” Beckham said. “I’m not too worried about it. I wasn’t too worried about it. I think it’s just kind of fun for all the speculation, but that’s about all it is usually.”

Omar Vizquel says the Sox should:

“I think we need to add something,” Vizquel said. “If it’s not another pitcher, probably it’s another hitter. This is a time where we really need to make a step toward getting better and to separate between the teams that are around, having a chance, and the teams that really need to go on to the playoffs. I guess the final cut is coming, this is the last time to make a change, and I think that with another guy on the team we might secure the next step.”

Omar explains what the team needs to Kenny:

Gonzales and Merkin have more.
