JJ examines the Dan Hudson-Edwin Jackson trade

JJ Stankevitz:

Honestly, I feel the same way about this trade as I felt when the Sox dealt Brandon McCarthy to the Rangers in the John Danks trade. I liked Danks, but wasn’t infatuated with him.

And the fact that I remember hearing McCarthy’s name thrown around in rumors for Carl Crawford made that trade hard to swallow at first.

Obviously, the Danks-for-McCarthy trade has turned out to probably be the best deal Kenny Williams has ever made. This Hudson/Holmberg-for-Jackson trade doesn’t have the potential to be the second-best given that Jackson is only under contract through 2011 and is a Boras client, so he probably won’t come back to the Sox after next year anyway. …

Excellent-excellent stuff from JJ.

Kenny Williams explains his attempt to land Manny Ramirez

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti spoke in generalities of how the White Sox contacted him on Friday about the mercurial outfielder.

“We got a call from one club, and they offered us a very low dollar figure with no player attached to it,” Colletti said. “We didn’t start it and we didn’t float his name. One team came forward, and I’m not sure what they were trying to accomplish.”

That explanation was provided by Williams on Saturday.

Impact players were the target for the White Sox, players who could move them up a notch in competing for a World Series title. Ramirez didn’t work out, nor did the other pursuits, but Williams will move forward from a position of strength.

“All I can say is, if we felt there were any impact players on the market, we were going to go after them,” Williams said. “We are strong enough as we are and everything fits together in such a way that the only thing we were going to add would be something of an impact guy.

“I’ll be honest. I was really optimistic on a couple of fronts that we would be able to add to this team without subtracting anything and unfortunately everything that presented itself over the last number of weeks, with the exception of the Edwin Jackson thing, just didn’t. It was destructive to what we were trying to do as a ballclub and it would have taken too much from what’s already on the field.”

with the exception of the Edwin Jackson thing? why, didn’t ‘the Edwin Jackson thing’ subtract something?

Kenny Williams pulls a fast one on Gordon Beckham and Ozzie Guillen [UPDATE]

At about 2:57 C.T.:

Once in the clubhouse, Williams decided to have some fun with Gordon Beckham and manager Ozzie Guillen.

“I wanted to have some fun with Gordon, and I knew he had been worried about some things even though I had talked with him previously about it. He was eating in the lunch room and I was sitting there and I called him over.”

What Williams did not know was that Paul Konerko has just been giving Beckham a hard time, saying, “This is about the time when Kenny gets ansy and decided to just throw Beckham into the deal to get it done.”

So Beckham heads off with Williams.  The duo walks into Guillen’s office and closes the door.  Guillen is shocked.

“First off, when you walk in on the trading deadline every player is looking at you out of the corner of their eye,” said Williams.  “So I walked in and called him over, and he had this look like, ‘No, really?’ And I called him into Ozzie’s office and Ozzie didn’t know anything about it but he saw Gordon walk in and then he saw me walk in and close the door behind Beckham and he went ‘No!’ and the other coaches went ‘No!.’

“Ozzie closed the door, and I sat Gordon down on the chair and I said ‘Well, I really would like to say one thing to you before I get into the nuts and bolts of this stuff.’ I said ‘That at-bat you had last night, where you pushed across that run, was one of the best at-bats you’ve had all year and I just want to say nice job.’ And I shook his hand and he said, ‘Is that it?.’

“‘That’s it,’ I said.

“He had a sigh of relief. Ozzie had a sigh of relief and started cursing at me, and then I walked back into the lunchroom and Konerko says “You won’t believe this but about one minute before you walked in, I told Gordon that this is about the time in the show when Kenny Williams says ‘To hell with it, I’ll give you Gordon Beckham.'” So when I walked in there and called him out, it was perfect timing. We had a little fun with it.”

White Sox trying to get Manny Ramirez – UPDATE #3

Rosenthal (FS):

The White Sox, frustrated by their inability to land Adam Dunn, made a run at Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez on Friday, but their overtures were rejected, major-league sources say. …  The White Sox wanted the Dodgers to pay all but $1 million of Ramirez’s remaining salary and did not offer a player in return, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions. … The Dodgers could keep Ramirez for the same reason, but sources say they are frustrated by his lack of reliability; this is his third trip to the DL this season.

Though the Sox were rejected, Manny makes for an interesting DH target for multiple teams.  Ramirez is having a strong year statistically, but he was otherworldly after the ’08 trade to the Dodgers.  Obstacles abound: Manny has a full no-trade clause, he’s on a rehab assignment for a calf strain, and he has over $7MM remaining on his contract (much of it deferred).  The contract makes Ramirez an August trade candidate, if the Dodgers feel they can spare him.

UPDATE: Rosenthal (FS):

It’s a halfcourt shot, but it’s still in the air: Source says White Sox intend to make one more run at Manny today.

Brown (Yahoo):

Manny market heating up. Sources: Three teams have called Dodgers about him — White Sox, Rays and mystery club. Dodgers are considering.

UPDATE #2: Heyman (SI):

manny appears amenable to going to the chisox. but the dodgers want big prospects back.

Heyman (SI):

dodgers asked chisox for [dayan] viciedo for manny

UPDATE #3: Multiple sources say it seems to be over:

Heyman (SI):

chisox, dodgers far apart on manny. doesnt look likely.

Nightengale (USAT):

The White Sox have yet to even hear a counter-offer from Dodgers on Manny, let alone engage in talks. WS moving on.

Cowley (CST):

Manny deal is dead, and now you can bury it next to the Dunn deal, which was taken off life support yesterday … mouth-to-mouth anyone?

Houston listening on offers for Brett Myers

Rosenthal (FS):

Sources: Astros fielding offers for Myers and Wandy. As Morosi reported, Twins on Myers. Told Astros not that motivated. We’ll see.

If the Twins get Myers and Kenny ends trading Hudson for Edwin freakin Jackson, Kenny’s trading deadline moves would be a spectacular failure.
