I’d rank them in this order: Hudson, Sale, Flowers, Mitchell, Viciedo.
“It can keep you up at night — all night, day after day after day after day,” said Williams with a laugh. “But that’s because you understand the ramifications of how it’s each little piece that fits into the puzzle is so important. It can mean the difference between you realizing your dreams or not.
“Whether it was Freddy Garcia, Jake Peavy, Alex Rios, or whomever, Geoff Blum, Carl Everett — pick a name. It’s still the same feeling, because I place as much of an importance on that small piece as I do the big pieces.
“But I’m long past the inner gut-wrenching stuff that goes on. I’m certainly more readily able and better equipped to turn the page if I don’t get the player I’ve coveted for a while. Years ago, it stayed with me for years. You can only do what you can do. Put forth your greatest effort and make sure all the people around you do the same. At the end of the day, man up to the consequences.”
The aforementioned AL executive, however, added that it wouldn’t be a stretch to see Gordon Beckham be included in a deal if the return was good enough. He did not, though, mention Fielder nor have any knowledge of Williams’ interest level in the slugger.
“From what I know, I think they would trade Beckham right now,” the executive said. “It would have to be a blockbuster, but I think they like Dayan Viciedo better. Beckham’s going to be a good player, but he got a little full of himself. If he keeps hitting the way he has been lately, it might change their minds.
“But when [Brent] Lillibridge came up and showed he was a better player than they thought he might have been, it may have lit a fire under Beckham.”
Yeah, that’s why Viciedo is getting 2 ABs a week…
The Angels and White Sox are said to have interest, but the price is expected to be steep. “A big arm and big bat,” said a source in reference to what it would take to get Fielder.
Buster Olney says the bat is Gordon Beckham and Ken Rosenthal says the arm is someone better than Dan Hudson. Kenny Williams should be hanging up now.
The other problem in acquiring Fielder is, again, the asking price. If Williams thought it was high for Dunn, he hasn’t seen anything yet. Start with John Danks or Gavin Floyd and add in Beckham.
So, the big arm is John Danks or Gavin Floyd. Run away Kenny!
A source on Sunday confirmed the Sox are mulling over a Dunn deal that would send rookie third baseman Dayan Viciedo and a prospect or two to the Washington Nationals.
Did the price come down?
