Here is the attendance index for each team (taken simply as the fans per home game, divided by the MLB average, for that season), averaged from 1969-2006.  Number 1 is the Dodgers, who had 61% more fans than average, on average (while playing .534 ball in that time frame):

Att_Index	win_percent	years	team
...
0.86 0.501 38	CHA

That’s 86%. 14% below average.

How about when the Sox play under .500?

Att_Index	win_percent	years	team
...
0.72 0.45 18	CHA

That’s 72%. 28% below average.

and when the Sox play over .500:

Att_Index	win_percent	years	team
...
0.98 0.548 20	CHA

That’s 98%. Just 2% below average.

So, keep winning and the fans will be coming Kenny!

Peoria Javelinas vs. Mesa Solar Sox: Boxscore, Gameday. Dayan Viciedo is playing 3B. C.J. Retherford is playing DH. Weather: 88 degrees, sunny.

BTW, here’s Jonathan Mayo:

Sergio Santos, White Sox: Like Lo, he’s gone four innings without allowing a run. He has yielded five hits, but hasn’t walked anyone and has struck out four. Plus, it’s a cool story since Santos played in the Fall League a few years back as a shortstop.

And C.J. Retherford is twitting @ CJRetherfordAFL.

UPDATE: Peoria won 8-1:

Dayan Viciedo: 1-5, 2 RBI, 2 K, .333 AVG
C.J. Retherford: 0-2, 1 BB, .364 AVG
Jordan Danks: 1-1, 1 HR, 1 BB, .357 AVG
Jacob Rasner: 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 K, 0 BB, 0 HR, 33.75 ERA

Sox not relying on one player for a big chunk of their offense. Wouldn’t RC/G or RC/27 been better? Those stats here.

The White Sox should consider finding work for respected infield coach Perry Hill to help work with fielders, especially Alexei Ramirez and Gordon Beckham.

A quick google search shows a lot of positive comments from pittsburgh pirates beat writers and blogs for Hill.

Dayan Viciedo: 2010 DH candidate?

from Merkin’s mailbag:

Will Dayan Viciedo be in the mix for a starting job in 2010?

A few scouts I talked to recently said Viciedo could benefit from another year in the Minors. But I believe Viciedo will get a serious look at in Spring Training, as a possible designated hitter candidate, after getting a first look during the current Arizona Fall League. He primarily played third last year for Double-A Birmingham, so the White Sox need to find him a true position with Beckham set at the hot corner.

Merkin, also, sees Alexei Ramirez and the other infield players staying at the same positions in 2010.

here are his comments on Gordon Beckham:

22) Gordon Beckham, SS, Chicago White Sox

Hit .270/.347/.460 in 103 games for the Chicago White Sox, very credible performance one year out of college. He’s gonna be a good one.

BTW, Gordon Beckham finished his rookie season with a .362 wOBA and a .289 BABIP. Also, a 2.1 WAR and a $9.6 million value.

Grant:

Dallas-raised Rudy Jaramillo, the Rangers hitting instructor for the last 15 seasons, has turned down the club’s one-year contract offer and is preparing to explore the free agent market after his contract expires October 31.

For some unexplainable reason Walker’s contract was renewed though.

In their first game, the Peoria Javelinas, this year’s Sox team, take on the Surprise Rafters. I see Dayan Viciedo at 3B in the lineups. Boxscore. Gameday. Weather: 75 degrees, sunny.

BTW, RHP Sergio Santos has replaced RHP Henry Mabee on the Peoria Javelinas roster.

UPDATE: Viciedo went 0-3 with an RBI (sacrifice fly) and 1 K. Santos pitched 2  scoreless innings (3 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB).  Gameday shows most of his fastballs at 95-96 MPH (he threw one at 96 and one at 97 too).

UPDATE #1: Tom Carkeek says Viciedo “look[ed] solid at third” but “did nothing” after his warning track sacrifice fly in his 1st at-bat.

We were #1

We continue our series of team-by-team reviews through the lens of the BtB Power Rankings with the American League Central.  Below, W% = true winning percentage, pW% = pythagenpat winning percentage, and cW% = component W% (the basis of these rankings).  All of the data I reference can be found in the final Power Rankings post of 2009.

10. Chicago White Sox.  TQI = 0.529

#10 in the entire league, #1 in the AL Central. TQI stands for Team Quality Index, a hypothetical winning % based on component estimates of runs scored and runs allowed after the league adjustment.
