Mark Gonzales:

Triple-A Charlotte pitcher Carlos Torres was scratched from his start Monday night, and a White Sox source said Torres was headed to Chicago for a promotion. Torres, 26, is 8-4 with a 2.20 ERA for the Knights. He has been used primarily as a starter this season, and several of Torres’ teammates who have made minor league rehabilitation assignments have been impressed with his control.

FS says Aaron Poreda will likely be demoted to Charlotte.

UPDATE #2: FS adds that Torres’ promotion will be short, as he will be demoted on Friday, to make room for Bartolo Colon.

UPDATE: BA’s Matt Eddy has more on Torres:

“He’s really had a great year,” Torres’ manager Chris Chambliss said. “His fastball, cutter and curveball have all been real effective, and his control has been outstanding.”

Torres’ fastball sits in the low 90s and touches 94, and as Chambliss indicated, his cutter and curveball have served him very well against righthanded batters, who have hit a mere .198/.291/.272 against him this season. Torres has done a better job keeping lefthanded batters in check this season, though improvement to his changeup could mean the difference between a relief role and a rotation spot in the big leagues.
