Baseball America’s Kyle Cofield scouting report (Linebrink trade)

Ballew @ BA:

[Kyle] Cofield has an ideal frame for a righthanded starter and when in sync he has two potentially plus pitches. His low-90s fastball tops out at 95 mph with heavy sink and his sharp curveball buckles the knees of righthanded batters at its best. Yet for all his strengths, Cofield has not been able to show any sustained consistency during his career. He made tremendous strides in 2008 and ’09, but was not able to maintain his strong performance during the 2010 slate, in part because of a two-month stint on the disabled list with an elbow injury. He returned in the starting rotation shortly after his return to Double-A Mississippi in early July, but found himself in the bullpen for the final two weeks after going 0-2, 6.75 in six starts. Despite ranking among the circuit leaders in walks, Cofield led the high Class A Carolina League with a 3.26 ERA in ’08. He struggles with his control, which stems from his lack of consistent feel for his pitches and falling behind in the count by being too fine. He also needs to add more depth and fade to his changeup.

Kenny Williams manages to trade Scott Linebrink! [UPDATE #2]

Morosi @ FS tweets (h/t MLBTR):

That’s the deal: Scott Linebrink to Braves for RHP Kyle Cofield, sources tell FOXSports.com.

and

Braves receive cash in the Linebrink trade. Not sure how much yet.

UPDATE: MLBTR says the Sox will send only $1.5 million to Atlanta. I thought the Sox would have to send at least $3-4 million. You are a fucking genius, Kenny!

UPDATE #2: Scot Gregor says the Sox will send $3.5 million to Atlanta. That’s more believable. Still good job, Kenny.

Most Important Sox, 2011 and beyond edition (#21-30)

Ballantini @ CSN:

As the coals in the hot stove are just beginning to get stoked up, it’s time to rank the current Chicago White Sox, in order of importance for 2011 and beyond. It’s not intended to be a strict list of merely the best players, or best values, on the White Sox. Rather, it takes into account team depth, the free agent market, or answering the question of which player would hurt the most not being on the team? …

30. Eduardo Escobar, SS

One great AFL season does not make a prospect. But given that Escobar has lit up a fall season that earns more than its fair share of attention from major-league eyes, Escobar becomes an important trade chip this winter. Perhaps the inclusion of the shortstop in a Carlos Quentin-Colby Rasmus deal with St. Louis gets that trade done.

White Sox are open for business

Buster Olney via MLBTR:

Heard this from multiple executives: The White Sox have made it clear they are open for business, and ready to trade off parts … from what has been a very disappointing team. The perception of other teams is that Paul Konerko is available right now, and … as we know, Chicago GM Ken Williams is a deal-maker,someone who will move quickly — as he did with the Contreras and Thome deals last fall.

Other players mentioned by MLBTR: A.J. Pierzynski, Mark Buehrle, Bobby Jenks, J.J. Putz, Scott Linebrink, Tony Pena, Matt Thornton, Andruw Jones, Freddy Garcia, Mark Kotsay, Omar Vizquel, Ramon Castro.

Kenny Williams trying to gauge the values of White Sox players

Cowley:

As far as the rumors about catcher A.J. Pierzynski, the Sun-Times reported three weeks ago that the Sox were talking to teams about him in an effort to gauge interest if they do get in a fire-sale mode. At the time, Williams didn’t like what he was hearing.

A source said that hasn’t changed and that Williams also has been trying to gauge what type of market there would be for closer Bobby Jenks and reliever Scott Linebrink. Again, he hasn’t heard anything to pique his interest at the moment.

Kenny Williams is losing his patience with the 2010 White Sox

Cowley:

A one-word text response spoke volumes. Asked on Saturday if he was ”losing patience,” general manager Ken Williams waited a good 10 minutes to fire back: ”Yes.” A cryptic ”yes” at that, period at the end and all.

… On the list of potential movable parts are A.J. Pierzynski, Paul Konerko (upon agreement), Bobby Jenks, Mark Buehrle (upon agreement), Andruw Jones, Carlos Quentin and Scott Linebrink. But what would be the return for any of those names? It would be nothing more than skimming dollars and cents off a sinking payroll — change for the sake of making a change. …

Nibbleness is the arithmetic mean of the distance of each pitch, in inches, from the edge of a normalized strikezone. Lower indicates “more Nibbley”.
Time to Plate is the time, in seconds, that it takes an average pitch of this type to reach the plate. This is strongly correlated with velocity, but also factors in movement.

Kenny Williams hoping to unload Scott Linebrink?

Rogers:

Linebrink had a bad spring, following a bad 2010, which followed a bad second half in ’09. Sources indicated that Williams was working the phones (standing by them, really) in hopes that the Cubs or another team desperate for a bullpen veteran would take him off the White Sox’s hands, even if the Sox had to eat some of the contract. The trade didn’t happen and the Sox decided against releasing Linebrink. The hope is he’ll pitch well enough to create some value, at which point he can be off-loaded.

BTW, Oney Guillen doesn’t approve of Greg Aquino not making the team while Jayson Nix does:

Aquino should have been on the team to protect other guys. Nix sevres no purpose. He aint gonna pinch hit fr anyone or [be used as a] defense replacement.
