Robin Ventura’s batting order thoughts

Ventura wants:

Chris Sale had a good start in today’s intrasquad game:

Sale said he was mindful during warmups and at the start of the game to not go hard from the onset.“

Just taking it nice and easy and really loosening it up because you have time,” he said. “You’re in no rush. That was nice to go out there and flip some in and start stretching it out and pick it up as it goes.”

Shingo Takatsu, aka Mr. Zero, made an appearance!

And a photo from today’s game. Chris Sale pitches to Alex Rios:

White Sox invite 18 players to 2012 Spring Training

whitesox.com press release:

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on minor-league contracts with right-handed pitcher Brian Bruney, left-handers Leyson Septimo and Eric Stults, catchers Damaso Espino and Hector Gimenez, infielders Dallas McPherson and Ray Olmedo and outfielder Delwyn Young.  All eight players, in addition to 10 players within the White Sox system, have received non-roster invites to the club’s spring training camp in Glendale, Ariz.

Right-handers Brian Omogrosso and Jacob Petricka, catchers Michael Blanke and Josh Phegley, infielders Jim Gallagher and Tyler Kuhn and outfielders Jordan Danks, Jared Mitchell, Brandon Short and Trayce Thompson, all received invites to major-league camp from within the organization.  Six of the 18 spring training invitees have major-league experience.

There seems to be 5 openings:

… Assuming the White Sox take 12 pitchers and make no further moves, one relief spot and four bench spots appear to be available. Brent Lillibridge and Tyler Flowers are certain to make the team, with Ozzie Martinez and Eduardo Escobar competing for the utility infield slot. Danks, Young, Gallagher, Bruney and Stults all have chances to compete for these final two openings.

Jake Peavy: I didn’t quit on the White Sox; Ozzie did

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ January 14, 2012 9:00 pm

Dave Van Dyck:

Saturday, he said, “I know he had a hard time, saying I quit on him, which couldn’t be further from the truth,” Peavy said. “I would never quit on a team. … Ozzie didn’t finish the season with us the last (two) games. So I don’t know who quit on who.”

As J.J. says it wouldn’t be unreasonable for Peavy to say Ozzie checked out much, much earlier than the last two games.

Scott Merkin reviews the White Sox 2011 season

Scott Merkin:

As for that brief era of good feeling between Williams and Guillen, another slow start didn’t help the cause. A dispute over whether Minor League sensation Dayan Viciedo, who was Williams’ choice, or leadoff man Juan Pierre should be playing every day in the outfield in early June seemed to re-start tensions. Basically, both sides needed a change at this point.

Maybe Pierre will end up in Miami too…

Jake Peavy has no problem with Don Cooper

Ozzie is another story though!

Mark Gonzales:

“Ozzie didn’t care for me at the end because I was shut down,” Peavy said. “It didn’t end on good terms. The one thing about it, Coop and I have an open relationship. There was one time where I disagreed about something he said about me being on and off after coming back from the surgery, and I told him about it.

“But let’s be real: The Sox don’t win a World Series without Mark Buehrle, and look at what Coop has done over the years. It takes time to know someone. I have no problems with (Cooper).”

Will Harold Baines become the new bench coach?

Mark Gonzales:

His [Kenny Williams] revelation that virtually silent but sound coach Harold Baines will play a greater role on the next coaching staff is a step in the right direction.

Or the new hitting coach? I think both positions require more communication though than 1st base coach though.

Ozzie Guillen, sabermetrics, and money

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ September 29, 2011 2:30 am
Tags: , , ,

Mark Gonzales:

Guillen also didn’t care for sabermetrics, and many of the Sox’s number crunchers avoided the dugout during pregame batting practice, which used to be their hangout in previous years.

Tension between Guillen and Williams in past years didn’t help, but that was secondary to Guillen’s wish for more money and security – in that order.

Good riddance!

Brett Ballantini wrote about the money factor too:

While Guillen spoke often about knowing his worth and needing more money to continue managing the White Sox (“f— more years—I want more money”), he would not be happy simply with a raise for next season, telling me directly that he needs both additional years and more money.

Joe Frisaro reports Ozzie’s deal with the Marlins is a 4-year, $10 million contract while he was earning $1.8 million a year with the Sox.

Remember when Ozzie said he loves the Sox more than anyone? Yeah…

John Sickels had this to say on his prospect review for Marinez:

10) Jhan Marinez, RHP, Grade C+:  4.27 ERA with 62/36 K/BB in 46 innings for Jacksonville, 42 hits. Outstanding K/IP ratio, strong stuff, too many walks.

The C+ grade is from the time he published his Marlins prospect list on back in January.

John Sickels gave Martinez C+ grade:

7) Osvaldo Martinez, SS, Grade C+:  .230/.286/.306 with 18 walks, 48 strikeouts in 278 at-bats for New Orleans. 3-for-20 in the majors. The bat is going to be a big problem, and he only ranked this high due to the weakness of the system. Baseball America had him fifth.

… With Guillen gone, general manager Ken Williams embarks on his second managerial hiring process. Possible candidates include Triple-A Charlotte manager Joe McEwing, Minor League director Buddy Bell, Tampa Bay bench coach Dave Martinez, and Cleveland first-base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. Tony La Russa, a close friend of Reinsdorf and one-time White Sox manager, also has been part of the speculation, but it is not certain whether La Russa will stay with the Cardinals.

Not La Russa. Please.

I nominate Tom Tango as replacement. Hell, he can become the GM too.

Joe Cowley:

According to multiple sources, the Sox and Florida Marlins are in the final stages of completing a deal that would send the never-boring Guillen to South Beach, ending his eight-year stay with the club he grew up white as a player and helped guide to a World Series in 2005 as a second-year manager.

The end is expected to become at the conclusion of Monday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at U.S. Cellular Field, sources said.

As far as the coaching staff, expect mass changes there as well, all except pitching coach Don Cooper, who according to sources, already has a deal on the table to stay with the organization.

… Sources have indicated, however, that privately Guillen walked away from the meeting knowing his days with the Sox were over, and the talk was more about the details of the split. It was not heated, and if anything, emotional from both sides.

Standard Joe Cowley disclaimer applies.

UPDATE: WSCR reports it too.

Bruce Levine reports that:

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen gathered his players before Monday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays and told them that it would be his final one, according to sources close to the situation.

UPDATE: More on the CSN postgame report.
