More stats.

MLBTR:

Myers, 31, has a $10MM option for 2013 that will vest if he finishes 45 games and doesn’t end the season on the disabled list.  To date, the closer has finished 29 games with 35 appearances in total.
… If the Astros trade the 31-year-old to a team that uses him as a setup man, the option likely won’t vest. There’s a good chance Myers will finish 45 games if he continues closing, but one executive suggested to Morosi that the $10MM vesting option isn’t that scary to prospective trade partners. “I wouldn’t imagine it’s going to be a huge hindrance,” the person said.

Myers’ contract:

  • 2 years/$23M (2011-12), plus 2013 club option
    • signed extension with Houston 8/1/10, replacing option year of previous deal
    • $2M signing bonus
    • 11:$7M, 12:$11M, 13:$10M club option ($3M buyout)
    • 2013 option guaranteed based on 2012 games started (re-worked 2/12 to base vesting on 2012 games finished, reflecting change to closer’s role)
    • $1.5M in annual performance bonuses

Wondering who the PTBNL is gonna be…

BaseballInstict looks at the minor leagues

Southern League:

Jared Mitchell, OF – The 23rd overall pick in the 2009 draft had his career interrupted when he tore an ankle tendon in the spring of 2010. He wasn’t the same in 2011, however was very impressive in the winter instructional league and warranted a promotion to AA. He will be interesting to follow this season as he has tons of potential.

Carolina League:

Trayce Thompson, OF – The 2009 2nd round picked didn’t really impress in 2009 and 2010.  However, some of that changed after hitting 24 HRs in 2011.  His batting average as awful and his K rate was extremely high.  The 21-year-old remains a good talent and will get time to work out some mechanical issues in the Carolina League.

South Atlantic League

Kevan Smith, C - Mature college catcher with power to all fields. He has the bat but is still learning to be a professional catcher.

International League:

Jordan Danks, OF – Has some pop and speed.  He wasn’t much of a prospect and after 2 full seasons at AAA, the 25-year-old doesn’t figure to be a major league regular.  Still, he will have an opportunity to find himself on the bench as a 4th or 5th outfielder before the season is over.

FutureSox looks at the White Sox starting pitching prospects

The starting pitching prospects looked at were Andre Rienzo, Addison Reed, Jacob Petricka, Charlie Leesman, Charlie Shirek, and Matthew Heidenreich:

The Brazilian righty [Andre Rienzo] is going to pitch in Winston-Salem this year and can arguably still be called a sleeper. He’s still flying mostly under the radar despite having the best statistical season of any White Sox minor league starter in 2010. Given the comparison to De Los Santos (and previous trades of Dan Hudson and Brandon McCarthy) it’s almost too obvious to say he could be trade bait. However, the fact that the Sox took it slowly with him last year compared to those three could be a sign that they intend to keep him instead of inflating his value for a trade.

BTW, Hector Santiago, Terry Doyle, and Andre Rienzo, threw a shutout against the Sox tonight.

17. Matt Heidenreich, rhp, Bristol White Sox

As the article says, all the parent clubs in the Appalachian League, besides the Braves (Danville) and the Twins (Elizabethton) have rookie-ball in more advanced leagues and usually send their college picks there. Also all the parent clubs, besides the White Sox (Bristol), usually send their high school picks in their Arizona or Gulf Coast leagues affiliates.

Here’s what they have to say on Stephen Sauer:

What he needs to improve: Sauer is a polished prospect. He already has fantastic control of a low 90′s sinking fastball, he keeps the ball on the ground, doesn’t give up home runs and strikes out a fair number of batters. He will need to continue working on his changeup, however, to help combat left-handed hitters, who hit .321 against him last year (vs. .271 AVG for right handers). …

Buddy Bell on the 2009 Draft

Buddy explains things:

“That’s something we hadn’t done much in the past,” player development director Buddy Bell noted. “Before I got here, most of the players we took were more from the college level. But by design we wanted to get higher-ceiling guys out of high school who we could project.”

BTW, here’s the article’s secondary title: “Mitchell, Phegley, Thompson on fast track to Major Leagues”

Trayce Thompson is on the fast track?

FutureSox looks on the Sox 2009 draft

from one writer’s favorite pick, Ryan Buch:

He’s got the potential to become a mid-rotation starter due to his solid three pitch mix of a low to mid 90’s fastball, excellent curve and improving change. The command of his fastball can be erratic which is what could prevent him from reaching his potential but he’s definitely the prime candidate to be next year’s Dexter Carter or Dan Hudson. …

Sox announce 6 draft signees

whitesox.com:

Josh Phegley was one of six selections the team announced it had come to terms with from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. Right-handed pitchers Matthew Heidenreich (fourth round), Kyle Bellamy (fifth round) and Jimmy Ballinger (11th round) joined Phegley, the 38th overall pick from Indiana University, infielder Jared McDonald (21st round) and first baseman Leighton Pangilinan (40th round) on that list. … Of the six picks, Phegley is the only one targeted for Class-A Kannapolis. The other five will begin at Advanced Rookie Bristol.

BTW, Mark Gonzales reported that “Jared Mitchell, the White Sox’s first pick in the June amateur draft, is expected to agree to terms soon.”

FutureSox speculates on the possible moves Phegley’s assignment will cause.

Justin Cassel demoted to Birmingham; Lucas Harrell promoted to Charlotte

FutureSox with the news:

After struggling in most of his starts in Charlotte this season, including last night, Justin Cassel was demoted to Birmingham. Cassel went 3-8 with a 5.26 ERA in 12 starts. Lucas Harrell was promoted to Charlotte in his place.

Another FutureSox scoop: 4th Round Pick RHP Matthew Heidenreich is expected to sign in the coming days and will forgo his UC Riverside committ.

Speaking of Birbingham, the Barons have the 2nd best winning percentage in the MiLB.
