Ken Rosenthal’s White Sox trade rumors

Rosenthal:

White Sox bullying the NL

The Marlins were one of the teams that inquired on left-hander Matt Thornton during the brief period that the White Sox were in sell mode.

The White Sox said they would not even entertain trading Thornton, and they have now won 11 of their last 12 games, reaching .500 for the first time since April 7. Their run started against the Tigers and continued against feeble NL opponents — the Cubs, Pirates and Nationals.

White Sox starting pitchers are 9-1 with a 1.95 ERA in this stretch. Their ability to contend could be determined by how they fare in their six series leading to the All-Star break. They will be home against the Braves and Cubs, on the road against the Royals and Rangers, home against the Angels and Royals.

If the White Sox end up buyers, their biggest need will be the same as it was in the off-season — a left-handed hitter for the middle of the order.

BTW, here’s Fangraphs Sox trade advice.

White Sox are open for business

Buster Olney via MLBTR:

Heard this from multiple executives: The White Sox have made it clear they are open for business, and ready to trade off parts … from what has been a very disappointing team. The perception of other teams is that Paul Konerko is available right now, and … as we know, Chicago GM Ken Williams is a deal-maker,someone who will move quickly — as he did with the Contreras and Thome deals last fall.

Other players mentioned by MLBTR: A.J. Pierzynski, Mark Buehrle, Bobby Jenks, J.J. Putz, Scott Linebrink, Tony Pena, Matt Thornton, Andruw Jones, Freddy Garcia, Mark Kotsay, Omar Vizquel, Ramon Castro.

Fangraphs on Matt Thornton and his “fantastic fastball”

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ June 2, 2010 9:25 pm

Moore:

The apparent cause of this success is his blazing fastball. Thornton is extremely reliant on the number one, using it a whopping 90.6% of the time – over 3% more than the next highest qualified reliever. Hitters have had an extremely difficult time with it. The 17.4% whiff rate is nearly three times the league average, and even when hitters do manage to make contact, it’s much more likely to wind up as a foul ball (24.6%) as opposed to in play (12.8%). Even when it’s in play, hitters haven’t been doing much with it. As the final nail in the coffin, hitters can’t simply take and expect a ball – Thornton’s fastball has a 70% strike rate, about 6 points above the league average. As such, Thornton’s fastball has been worth over 10 runs according to pitch type linear weights, the most valuable pitch to any reliever in baseball, eclipsing Carlos Marmol’s slider by over a run.

Joe Cowley says season’s over; but he has a plan!

Cowley says replace Mark Buehrle and Gavin Floyd with Cliff Lee and Daniel Hudson, re-sign Freddy Garcia, trade Bobby Jenks, re-sign J.J. Putz, pickup Matt Thornton’s option, say goodbye to Paul Konerko, A.J. Pierzynski, Carlos Quentin, promote Dayan Viciedo and Tyler Flowers, sign Carl Crawford or Adam Dunn, and sign the one and only Juan Uribe.

I say forget free-agents and the money in the draft and international scouting.

Matt Thornton helps his high school build 3 ballfields

Rietsma @ SJ:

Centreville, Mich. — A proud moment in the annals of Centreville Public Schools took place Saturday, as Superintendent Bill Miller directed a ceremony dedicating the high school’s new baseball and softball fields. A crowd of about 100 people — including athletes who played in an eight-team softball tournament and four-team baseball tournament after the program — listened and watched as Miller recognized several volunteers who made the new athletic complex possible. Near the top of the list were Al and Trudy Murk, former owners of the Centreville Village Market; and Matt Thornton, a 1995 Centreville High School graduate and pitcher for the Chicago White Sox. Thornton was represented by his parents, Jack and Sheila Thornton. The Murks and Thornton, in conjunction with Major League Baseball and its “Baseball For Tomorrow” grant, combined to cover nearly half of the estimated $440,000 to develop the baseball field and two softball fields. …
