Curiously, Lance Berkman had recently exercised his no-trade rights for possible deal with White Sox before accepting Yankees’ trade.

Heyman (SI) said last friday:

chisox like prince fielder but have discussed dunn, laroche and berkman, in that order, as possible 2nd choices

If the Sox are not hot on Prince Fielder, and the Sox are out of the Adam Dunn sweepstakes, it makes sense they are interested in Lance Berkman, Brad Hawpe:

Olney (ESPN):

Heard this: The White Sox consider Lance Berkman as one of their Plan B options, now what they don’t expect to get Adam Dunn.

Renck (Denver Post):

The White Sox have been the other team poking around about Hawpe. Not sure how serious. All depends on what happens with Adam Dunn

Stats from B-R: Fielder, Dunn, Berkman, Hawpe

Other possibilities: Scott, Branyan, Laroche

UPDATE: Prince Fielder if off the market (staying in Milwaukee).

Hang up if they ask for Danks, Floyd, Hudson or Beckham, Kenny. Not for a 2 month rental. Not for Fielder too since he’ll probably cost 2 of those.

Stats from B-R: Fielder, Dunn, Laroche, Berkman

Other possibilities: Scott, Branyan

Sounds like Kenny will be selling says Scot Gregor

Gregor says Berkman won’t be coming to the Sox (age, health, salary) and:

Most important, earlier this week Kenny sounded much more interested in subtracting than adding. That will change if the Sox finally put something together, but it’s not looking too good at the moment.

“I don’t think anyone is really prepared to make any deals right now,” Kenny said at the Cell on Monday. “And any interest expressed in any players out there who are impact guys has been done so for quite some time. There really isn’t much substance to anything at this stage of the season. Another 30 games, and you’ll start to see talk pick up.

“But if you’re not playing well it doesn’t make any sense to go down those roads, anyway. You’ve got to warrant that.”

Levine:

The Houston Astros may be ready to start moving some of their veteran players, according to major-league sources. Switch-hitting first baseman Lance Berkman has caught the interest of the Chicago White Sox.

… Berkman is in the last year of a $14 million contract with an option year for 2011 or a $2 million buyout. Berkman has played the outfield and first base, but he’s viewed now as a first baseman. Houston mostly likely would want young players back in any for a veteran.

BTW, Berkman is be willing to waive his no-trade clause.

UPDATE: Olney via Twitter:

Rival execs think Oswalt and Berkman would have trade value–only if the Astros are prepared to take secondary prospects and eat a lot of $.
