Jake Peavy wants White Sox players to become dirtbags

“I agree with Kenny in that we have to have more attitude,” Peavy told MLB.com. “We need a little more savvy and scrappiness. I’m saying in everything — pitching, defense, running bases, every aspect of our game. We have to find a way to play with a little more fire, a little more desire to win. I’m not saying there aren’t guys on this team who really want to win. But we need to get it in our blood. When we are at Wrigley Field, we have to flat out want to win more than the Cubs. It’s oozing out your pours. It will take a team with the talent like we have over the top.”

“The bottom line is we are four games behind a very good Detroit team. We can’t lay back. We have to show up every day, and for the next three hours, bust [our butts] and find a way to win. Get that mentality and attitude about us.”

“Physically I feel good,’’ he said two days after throwing 5 1/3 innings and 104 pitches against the Cubs. “I’m looking forward to Colorado [next start]. “Obviously, I’m not even a year out of surgery yet [July 14], and I’ve always been told that a year out of surgery you should feel close to normal and be gaining strength. I hope I’m going to get stronger, but that stuff is to be determined. Certainly, I hope I can pitch the remainder of the season healthy, or semi-healthy, and help the team win.’’

Numbers don’t completely reflect it, but he’s made a lot of progress since last year. Upside remains huge, but as big as his upside is, he’s just as raw.

John Sickels on the Dan Hudson-Edwin Jackson trade

The White Sox picked up Edwin Jackson from the Diamondbacks for Dan Hudson and David Holmberg. Jackson has a great arm but is a mediocre pitcher at this point. I like Dan Hudson a lot, and frankly his chance to pitch well down the stretch is just as good as Jackson’s, if not better. Holmberg is a decent Grade C+ pitching prospect. I don’t like this trade from the White Sox perspective at all. There are rumors that Jackson was supposed to be flipped to another team but it didn’t happen, so as it stands I think this is a bad trade for Chicago.

BTW, Hudson got the win in his first game as a D-back today.

Honestly, I feel the same way about this trade as I felt when the Sox dealt Brandon McCarthy to the Rangers in the John Danks trade. I liked Danks, but wasn’t infatuated with him.

And the fact that I remember hearing McCarthy’s name thrown around in rumors for Carl Crawford made that trade hard to swallow at first.

Obviously, the Danks-for-McCarthy trade has turned out to probably be the best deal Kenny Williams has ever made. This Hudson/Holmberg-for-Jackson trade doesn’t have the potential to be the second-best given that Jackson is only under contract through 2011 and is a Boras client, so he probably won’t come back to the Sox after next year anyway. …

So, Kenny’s move was trading 5 years and 2 months 6 years of Dan Hudson for 1 year and 2 months of Edwin Jackson. Ugh…

Was Kenny Williams duped by Washington GM Mike Rizzo? [UPDATE #2]

But KW also sounded like he’s been duped _ likely by Washington Nationals GM Mike Rizzo _ in talks for Adam Dunn. While he didn’t mention any specific names, Kenny said it’s been “frustrating” dealing with newer GMs, of which Rizzo is one. He also mentioned “playing games” and “being above board,” so you pretty much get the picture. I’m hearing that Rizzo has taken Dunn off the market, but who really knows? These have been the most unusual days leading up to the trade deadline I ever can remember, by far. But I’m thinking the original plan was for the Sox to acquire Jackson and send him to the Nats for Dunn.

I don’t know if Kenny was duped, I know that Kenny made a crappy trade.

UPDATE: HardballTalk:

According to Olney, the Nationals had told teams interested in Adam Dunn that a “key piece” to get a deal done was Edwin Jackson. This forced teams to try to pry Jackson away from the Diamondbacks. Of course, just before 1pm EST today, the White Sox acquired Jackson from the D-Backs in exchange for right-hander Daniel Hudson and left-hander David Holmberg. Now, according to Olney, the Nationals are indicating that they don’t want Jackson.

If this what Kenny complained about, the fault is his. You don’t trust anyone, especially one you haven’t done business with before, Kenny.

Q: Where does all this [trade rumors] come from?

A: A lot of times people like to guess. I think agents like to throw it out there. For instance, one of the things I found curious of this whole notion if the White Sox can get Edwin Jackson from Arizona, then they can get Adam Dunn from Washington. It never made any sense to me. I think that is very agent-driven, in that the same people I see writing about this get it from the same place. I know that I talked to [Nationals GM] Mike Rizzo, and he said, I don’t want Edwin Jackson, he makes $8 million next season and he has a 5.00 ERA. He said, “I have four pitchers I know are going to be in my rotation next year, why would I spend $8 million on a fifth starter and trade Adam Dunn, who I might be able to sign. It just doesn’t make sense, but it gets thrown out there a lot. Colorado has clearly made certain guys available: Aaron Cook, [Joe] Beimel, who’s been OK at times. Some of it makes a lot of sense, but the fact is we have so many media outlets. I find it a lot of fun, but it can also drive you crazy trying to chase them all down.

BTB and Fangraphs on the Dan Hudson-Edwin Jackson trade

Jackson’s inconsistency and lack of command will always hold him back, it seems. But right now he’s flashing a strong 51% groundball rate along with good whiff and contact rates, so there’s a lot to like about Jackson beyond one of the hardest fastballs among starters in all of baseball.

Jackson gives the White Sox a small upgrade over Hudson through 2011, although I’m not convinced that it’s enough to forfeit Hudson’s extra years of team control. ZiPS projects Hudson to put up a 4.06 FIP for the rest of the season, compared to a 4.16 FIP for Jackson. I think that alone says a lot about how close these guys are in terms of performance. And when one guy is owed about $10M through 2011 before hitting free agency and the other guy isn’t even arbitration-eligible yet, I think you need a lot more than a slight upgrade to justify making that kind of deal.

I don’t really like this deal for the White Sox. Holmberg’s nothing special, really, but I’m not really convinced that Jackson is some sort of big upgrade on Hudson. It just feels like the White Sox just committed to spending around $10M through 2011 on a pitcher that’s not much better than the one he’s replacing. …

Kenny Williams likes to deal, but this is not one of his better ones. One may expect the price for Jackson to be lower than what the White Sox paid, given what the returns were for superior pitchers in Roy Oswalt and Dan Haren. Instead of keeping Hudson and letting him fill the rotation spot that Jake Peavy vacated, the White Sox decided to go out and fill it with a more expensive source. While Jackson probably won’t be enough by himself to change the direction of the White Sox’s season, he is a good piece for this year and beyond. All that remains to be seen is if he will stay a White Sox for long.

The  White Sox reportedly will pay the remainder of Jackson’s $4.2 million salary this year and all of the $8.35 next year.

MLB.com’s 2010 Sox prospects and organization preview

Top 10 prospects:

Clevelan Santeliz, RHP: A setup man extraordinaire at Birmingham last summer, the Venezuelan prospect was added to the 40-man roster after posting an 0.96 ERA in 40 games and striking out 52 batters in 56 1/3 innings. He moved to the closer role at the end of the season and collected 10 saves. Throwing a fastball in the mid-90s and a plus slider, he pitches with a lot of energy and is a ton of fun to watch.

organization preview:

LHP David Holmberg (2[nd round]) is a high school star out of Florida who has four solid pitches, with a fastball that touches 90 mph, a 12-6 curve, a changeup and a slider. He also has a good feel for the mound.

RHP Kyle Bellamy (5) out of Miami is a fast-track prospect who combined for a 1.23 ERA in 20 games in relief between Bristol and Kannapolis, walking just two while striking out 32 in 22 innings. He limited hitters to a .169 average and then moved on to the Arizona Fall League, where he had a 1.59 ERA in five games.

RHP Justin Collop (6) out of Toledo had a 2.72 ERA in 15 games for Great Falls, striking out 33 in 39 2/3 innings and limiting Pioneer League hitters to a .257 average.

RHP Ryan Buch (8) out of Monmouth had the best fastball in the Draft class, one that touched the high 90s, as well as a curveball with plus potential. In 16 games in relief, he had a 3.38 ERA and limited hitters to a .183 average at Great Falls.
