Hayes:

Black is back for his second stint with the BriSox, but in a different role. He’ll primarily be catching, after playing in the infield last season.

“I made the transition to catching towards the end of spring [training] and all of extended [spring training],” Black said. “It’s going well.”

Here’s what they have to say on Dayan Viciedo:

What needs to improve: A little bit of everything. So far in his professional career, Viciedo has been unable to hit the breaking ball with any sense of consistency, leading to frequent strike outs. His defense was also put into serious question, after committing 30 errors at the hot corner in 284 chances.

FutureSox looks on the Sox 2009 draft

from one writer’s favorite pick, Ryan Buch:

He’s got the potential to become a mid-rotation starter due to his solid three pitch mix of a low to mid 90’s fastball, excellent curve and improving change. The command of his fastball can be erratic which is what could prevent him from reaching his potential but he’s definitely the prime candidate to be next year’s Dexter Carter or Dan Hudson. …

SoxMachine:

After watching Jared Mitchell in action for the first time since joining the White Sox organization, one word comes to mind: Patience. … Mitchell provided far more excitement in the field, as you’ll see in the middle of that compilation. He helped out Nevin Griffith by making a diving catch to a slicing liner in right-center in the second inning, and then made another diving catch in the left-center gap to end the fourth inning. …

Jim also has video of Mitchell, reports on Nevin Griffith, Josh Phegley, Daniel Black, Drew O’Neil, Kenny Williams Jr., and a Photo Gallery from the game.

SoxMachine’s Winston-Salem & Kannapolis Minor League roundup

Justin Edwards:

at Winston-Salem: 1-0, 7.00 ERA, 9 IP, 10 H, 4 HR, 2 BB, 3 K
at Kannapolis: 4-3, 3.80, 45 IP, 48 H, 2 HR, 7 BB, 30 K

The Sox have put Edwards on the fast track following Tommy John surgery, getting the call to Winston-Salem despite being the third- or fourth-most deserving Kannapolis pitcher.  His fastball is in the high-80s, so he has some work to do in terms of missing bats.

Dan Black scouting report

FutureSox has the scoop:

When doing my research on Black I found it very hard to find any negatives about him, and believe me I tried. His numbers are fantastic, he was a career .313 hitter at Purdue with lots of power and a phenomenal ability to get on base with him tying a Big 10 record for walks in a season with 62 this year. Then I started delving into the scouting reports expecting to find lots of negatives on his bat speed but nothing, all the reports I read indicated the same things as the numbers, plus raw power, a great ability to get on base and also a very strong arm. So this is where Black really started puzzling me as the reports and numbers don’t match the 14th round draft grade, so I sent some E-mails out to people in the industry to try and dig up anything and thus far the only negative report I’ve received was from Baseball America’s John Manuel (via Aaron Fitt, thanks for that!) with him saying “The feeling is that he doesn’t have a position. No scouts loved him and I didn’t put him high on the Indiana list. I just don’t think teams believe in him much and my guess is he put out a higher number than teams were willing to go for.”
