Goldstein @ BP:

Brent Morel, 3B/SS, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte): 3-for-5, 3B, R, RBI. 17-for-36 (.472) during nine-game hitting streak; .324/.352/.505 in 74 Triple-A games.

and from Tuesday’s update:

Brent Morel, 3B/SS, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte): 2-for-4, HR (7), R, RBI

Splitting time between third base at shortstop due to Dayan Viciedo’s promotion, Morel’s positional switches have had no effect on his hitting, as he’s gone 13-for-26 during his current seven-game hitting streak to raise his Triple-A averages to .321/.350/.498. He’s been a surprisingly solid shortstop, although the hot corner is his more natural position, and one where he’ll get a very long look next spring.

John Sickels answered a question on Brent Morel:

Q: Morel just keeps on hitting, and now he’s being moved around the infield a little bit (to accommodate Viciedo, mainly). Can he be an everyday 3B?

A: If they don’t expect him to hit 20 homers, why not? Think Joe Randa.

He also answered my question on Andre Rienzo. Unfortunately Rienzo isn’t on his knowledge base yet:

Q: what can you tell us about the 22 year old (07/1988) brazilian in kannapolis’ rotation? his ratios look pretty good

A: I don’t know anything about him other than the numbers at this point. Will have to research.

Stay tuned for the answer!

Goldstein:

Brent Morel, 3B/SS, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte): 2-for-4, K. 16-for-38 (.421) in last nine games and .318/.346/.478 since move to Triple-A; even more fascinating is that he’s playing shortstop with Viciedo’s return to Charlotte.

Goldstein on Morel’s SS defense: “Makes the plays he gets to, but limited range.”

White Sox try to keep the team roster Teahen-less

Kenny likes the current team:

Another consideration is that the Sox like the way their roster is constructed while putting a premium on defense, where Omar Vizquel has solidified the third base position since Teahen was injured.

“There’s no rush,” general manager Ken Williams said Sunday morning. … “I think more than anything, you’re trying to put the best roster on the field to win today’s game. The last thing I want to happen is we lose this division by one game, a half game, and we think back and were there times, and I do that. I go back, ‘we should have won this game, we should have won that game. You put the best team out there when you can put the best team out there. There are advantages, roster-wise, when you get to September, but the focus has to be on today.”

You should’ve thought that before trading for him and then giving him a 3-year contract, Kenny.

Gonzales:

One of Sale’s mentors at Charlotte was Randy Williams, who spent the first three months with the Sox but has spent most of the past 10 seasons in the minors.

“He kind of showed me the ropes along the way,” Sale said. “He’s been here. He’s done it and he’s been playing for a while. It figures someone like him would be good to help me out.”

White Sox call up 2010 1st round pick Chris Sale [UPDATE]

Soffian @ N-P:

The Chicago White Sox could call up former FGCU pitcher Chris Sale today, according to media reports, giving the school its first two major leaguers within two days of each other following the Chicago Cubs’ call-up of former Mariner High School pitcher Casey Coleman on Monday.Sale’s agent told The News-Press that conversations with the White Sox front office on Monday also included the possibility that Sale could be called up today.

“Oh, you’re kidding,” Sale’s father, Allen, told The News-Press when contacted Tuesday. “We were given a heads-up that it might be coming but we didn’t know it would be tonight. Wow. I’m going to be heading to Detroit. I’m actually at a Rotary meeting. I’ve got to put my badge back and haul to the office.” …

Merkin @ CWS:

… “He looks like a good young lefty,” said White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper of Sale on Tuesday morning, before pausing to take a phone call from Richard Dotson, Sale’s pitching coach at Charlotte. “You never know. We might see him tomorrow.”

According to White Sox Minor League pitching coordinator Kirk Champion, Sale does not operate in awe of his quick ascent to prime time. His fastball has been clocked anywhere from 91 to 96 mph, and he also throws a slider and changeup.

The organization has the slender Sale targeted for the starting rotation eventually, but much like the way Mark Buehrle began his career in 2000, Sale’s Major League debut will come out of the bullpen and looks as if it will come on this eight-game road trip to Detroit and Baltimore.

“Well, he’s prepared,” said Champion of Sale. “Whatever it took him to get to that point, whoever has had him along the way, prepared him well.

“We have not done anything as an organization from that standpoint. Our scouts around him had the ability to recognize this quality. But he carries himself very well — that’s the best way to describe it.”

UPDATE: Soffian @ N-P:

After a day of speculation, former FGCU pitcher Chris Sale got the call from the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night that he was on his way to the major leagues. “He’ll be in Detroit tomorrow,” Sale’s father, Allen Sale, told The News-Press Tuesday night.

Seattle wants Brent Morel for Russell Branyan; White Sox scouting Brad Hawpe

Gonzales:

Bill Scherrer, one of the Sox’s top evaluators, was in Florida last week for the Marlins’ series with Colorado, which has left-handed hitter Brad Hawpe.

The Sox had a limited chance Monday to watch Seattle’s Russell Branyan, who has been sidelined with back stiffness. But the Mariners made an indirect inquiry about Sox third base prospect Brent Morel.

The two top targets appear to be Washington’s Adam Dunn and Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder. A Nationals scout watched the Sox’s Triple-A Charlotte affiliate last week, and a Brewers scout observed the Sox in Seattle and in Oakland on Friday. …
