White Sox sign 33rd round draft pick C Bryce Mosier (HS)

Nitz @ MDH:

Bryce Mosier thought he had his mind set on attending San Diego State University.

Mosier, a 33rd round pick by the White Sox in June’s amateur draft, had Sox scout George Cachigian come to his house and make him an offer to sign last week.

With the offer not being what he wanted, Mosier was planning on delaying pro ball and playing collegiately for three years, which is what players are forced to do before they’re eligible for the draft again.

However, Mosier ended up having a change of heart. He talked to people he knew who had played college ball and decided that going pro straight out of high school would be better in the long run. …

Bats: R
Throws: R
Height: 6’02″
Weight: 200
Born: 1993-05-21

Mosier was assigned to Bristol.

Scouting reports:

Baseball America:

Bryce Mosier, a physical catcher with a slightly above-average arm and solid receiving skills. Mosier impressed scouts at the Jesse Flores Memorial All-Star Game in November, earning MVP honors with a two-run triple. He has some feel for the barrel and power potential, and he could sneak into the back of the top 10 rounds.

BaseballBeginnings:

Bryce Mosier (Valhalla HS) should be a very good college catcher at the next level. He will throw and catch enough and showed some pop during BP. He’s not a physically imposing catcher and won’t be a basher, but he’s going to some value for the next few years.

PerfectGame.org:

Bryce Mosier is a 2011 C/3B with a 6-2 185 lb. frame from El Cajon, CA who attends Valhalla HS. Tall well proportioned build, good present strength. Tall balanced hitting stance, good balance, shows nice bat speed, ball comes off the barrel hard, solid gap power, hits under control, polished hitter who should keep improving. Good raw arm strength behind the plate, 1.93 best pop, compact release, straight back receiver, still developing footwork/quickness.

Power @ WVMN:

Dream jobs are hard to come by, but one WVU baseball player has his and the opportunity of a lifetime. Grant Buckner was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 26th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

“I always said it’s what I wanted to do, it’s my biggest dream ever. I’ve always said I wanted my first real job to be a professional baseball player,” said Buckner. “That’s my job now so, no more school, just work on baseball all the time. That’s a pretty cool feeling.”

Buckner was the 801stpick in this year’s draft and the second Mountaineer shortstop in as many years to be drafted by a major league team.

“I’ll be heading to the Appalachian League in Bristol, Virginia,” Buckner said.  “That is the next step.” …

Here’s his scouting report from perfectgame.org via mack’s mets:

5-11 from: – link  – RF, Grant Buckner, W Virginia, 6’1 1/2 210, R/R, powerful built, solid RF arm, 40 plus runner and field, 60 power, could perhaps play 1b in pro ball, has good hands and moves well for a big man, swing a tad long with power to all fields. Someone will give him a 4-8 round look for sure and don’t be surprised if this kid gets to the show in 2-3 years with his makeup.

White Sox sign 17th round draft pick OF Collin Kuhn and 28th round pick OF Kyle Robinson

Crunk @ AR:

Collin Kuhn and Kyle Robinson are set to begin their professional baseball careers as the pair have signed professional contracts with the Chicago White Sox. Kuhn was the White Sox’s 17th round selection with the 531st overall pick, while Robinson was drafted in the 28th round with the 861st overall pick. The pair will begin their professional careers with the Bristol White Sox, Chicago’s rookie league team in Bristol, Va

First, here’s Collin Kuhn’s scouting report from Baseball America:

Fellow Razorback outfielder Collin Kuhn outhit Kyle Robinson against better league pitching and was the team’s leading home run hitter. Like Robinson, he can be too aggressive at the plate, but at least he has speed and can sub in as a center fielder. His below-average arm may limit him from being a fourth outfielder, however. He’s a fourth-year junior with present strength and no carrying tool.

Second, here’s Kyle Robinson’s scouting report from Baseball America:

Arkansas has its own senior sign in outfielder Kyle Robinson, who has power and athleticism. He struggled in Southeastern Conference play, hitting just .175.

AFL Update: Josh Phegley in, Jason Bour out

Tags: , , , ,

Mark Gonzales reports Josh Phegley will not play in the AFL and will be replaced by Jason Bour. No reason was given for Phegley’s leaving.

Gonzales has a couple of minor-league coach updates too. First, Pete Rose Jr. will coach the Bristol Sox. Second, Ernie Young is leaving his post as the Kannapolis Intimidators’ coach to coach the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit’s low-A affiliate) and he is expected to be replaced by Tommy Thompson.

UPDATE: CSN’s Kevin Czerwinski has more regarding Josh Phegley. He says “blood tests revealed that his condition had not improved enough for him to continue playing.” Phegley battled ITP syndrome throughout the season.

Best of luck to Josh.

Hayes @ TC:

At 6-foot-2 and 195-pounds Hollis doesn’t physically stand out from the rest of the players on the BriSox roster. But as a youngster growing up in Chicago, he stood much bigger than his peers. So much so, his parents and friends labeled him “The Big Hurt” the same nickname of famed White Sox slugger Frank Thomas.

That was quite a popular nickname in the Windy City during Hollis’ formative years.

His house sat 10 minutes from U.S. Cellular Field and he recalled hearing the fireworks that would be set off when the White Sox hit a home run or closed out another victory. …
