Jordan Danks concentrating on off-speed pitches

“I’m working on not trying to be vulnerable to off-speed pitches,” Danks said. “That’s something I’ve worked on very hard here in Arizona. I’m concentrating on taking that first-pitch change-up, the pitch that used to look like a fastball to me, and now with that philosophy I’m getting ahead on the count and getting my pitch more often.” “He’s close, he’s very close to being ready,” White Sox hitting instructor Gary Ward said Tuesday night. “He’s definitely going to be playing in the major leagues soon.” Ward is the Sox Triple-A hitting instructor and also batting instructor for the Peoria Javelinas, the Sox team in the AFL. Drafted in the seventh round, Danks’ numbers were just so-so after getting promoted to Double-A Birmingham from Single-A in 2009. Cutting down on a bit of a long swing has been Danks’ goal in the AFL. …

Jordan Danks, OF, Chicago AL

The key with the AFL is too not get too excited with the batting average or how many homers a player hits. Most players are there for extra work, which likely means there is something that they need to improve upon. Danks is a perfect example of that… He was off to an excellent season in ‘09 before fading at double-A in the second half. His raw power does not play well in games, in terms of home run power, and he hit just nine homers this past year in just over 400 at-bats. As a result, his strikeout rate of 26.0% is rather high. Danks has made nice strides in the AFL by striking out just 10 times in 58 at-bats. Even better, he’s walk 12 times. If he can keep that up, it will significantly improve his other numbers, which will then make him a more valuable addition to your fantasy squads.

Jordan Danks making a strong impression on the AFL

Levine:

Sox outfielder Jordan Danks is making a strong impression on the scouts down here. Sox minor-league director Buddy Bell told me that Danks already is the best defensive outfielder in the organization.

Carkeek:

Baseball America rates the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Danks as the best athlete in the Sox’s system and its top defensive outfielder. Scouting reports play up his range and arm, and he has shown off both in all three outfield positions in Arizona.

Jordan usually bats second in the AFL, though he batted lead-off with the Barons:

“I’m not a typical leadoff hitter. The whole Southern League knew I was a first-pitch swinger. I led off every game and swung at a lot of first-pitch changeups. I’ve asked a lot of coaches about swinging at the first pitch, and they say if it’s there, go for it.”

Jim Callis on Jordan Danks AFL performance

Jim Callis on Jordan Danks batting .388/.508/.571 through 14 AFL games:

I often say that people shouldn’t read too much into AFL stats, as I just did in the previous answer. The conditions favor hitters, there are few quality pitching prospects and a lot of the players are worn out after the long minor league season. Just glance at the AFL record book, and you’ll see that Ken Harvey holds the league records for batting (.479), slugging (.752) and on-base percentage (.537); Brandon Wood owns the mark for homers (14); and Orlando Miller set the standard for RBIs (44).

Danks is what he is. Though he’s 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, he never has grown into the power scouts projected he would when he was a potential first-round pick as a high schooler. He hit 13 homers in three seasons at the University of Texas, and he has slugged .425 in pro ball. He’s 23 now, and he’s not going to have average power. So those AFL power numbers are a chimera.

That said, Danks can be a solid regular. He has the bat speed and swing to hit for average, and he draws enough walks to post a solid OBP. He runs well enough to steal a few bases and play center field, and he has enough arm to move to right field if he loses a step.
