His BABIP is not sustainable at the ML level. And he strikes out 3x or 4x times more than he walks. In fact, his BB% has decreased every year from 8.5% in 2008 Rookie ball to 4.0% in 2010 AAA. You would expect a hitter’s walk total would increase with each additional year of experience. Plus he’s not a power guy. Once ML pitchers get a book on this guy…..

With Chavez’s injury history, I can’t imagine that he will be healthy all year so you would be comparing Chavez at about 75% to Morel at 100%. In that case, I think you would end up with sour and indistinguishable numbers either way. I’m just not a big Morel fan offensively.

By the way, Teahen’s spring training injury was a sore elbow which may have contributed to his throwing problems along with his later finger injury. If he’s free from injuries coupled with his new fitness program, then Teahen’s 2nd year with the Sox could show the same improvement that Rios did after Rios got adjusted to playing with a contender. I believe Teahen deserves another shot.

Why is McPherson not a real option? Injuries?

Absent Chavez, I have no problem giving Teahen the majority of playing time at 3B. He struggled in his first year playing on a contending team just like Alex Rios did. Rios bounced back and I believe Teahen would also. Also, Teahen had some injury (shoulder IIRC) in spring training that carried into the season and his finger injury just made matters worse. Teahen has also been working with a physical fitness trainer to improve his body and health. I want to see what a completely healthy Teahen can do.
