White Sox very interested in 3B Eric Chavez?

Gurnick @ MLB (1/20):

[Eric] Chavez has already worked out for a handful of American League clubs that could also use Chavez as a designated hitter, among them Toronto, Seattle and the Yankees. The White Sox also are believed very interested.

The Sox signed Adam Dunn on December 2 and Paul Konerko on December 8. So, I assume they are interested in Chavez as a 3B-man.

  1. really, I would like that but do we need him, I thought it was morel/teahan and vizquel at utility. that’s a lot at 3b

  2. Assuming Chavez is healthy (a really big IF), he is much better than Morel who will never be the offensive player that Chavez was in his healthy days. Morel may have the glove but I don’t believe he will ever have the bat (i.e., OBP and SLG) as he lacks plate discipline and power. Morel is a perfect example of an ordinary player who desperate fans believe will answer their prayers. And McPherson only sees the Cell if he buys a ticket.

Absent Chavez, I have no problem giving Teahen the majority of playing time at 3B. He struggled in his first year playing on a contending team just like Alex Rios did. Rios bounced back and I believe Teahen would also. Also, Teahen had some injury (shoulder IIRC) in spring training that carried into the season and his finger injury just made matters worse. Teahen has also been working with a physical fitness trainer to improve his body and health. I want to see what a completely healthy Teahen can do.

    • yes, Chavez is a better player than Morel if he’s healthy. But I expect them to have similar WAR numbers at the end of the season. Bad/good expectation?

Why is McPherson not a real option? Injuries?

      • McPherson:
        1. He always hit minor league well (though with many KO’s and few walks)
        2. He has never hit major league pitching (I imagine plate discipline being a major problem)
        3. He has had back problems
        4. He turns 31 this year.

With Chavez’s injury history, I can’t imagine that he will be healthy all year so you would be comparing Chavez at about 75% to Morel at 100%. In that case, I think you would end up with sour and indistinguishable numbers either way. I’m just not a big Morel fan offensively.

By the way, Teahen’s spring training injury was a sore elbow which may have contributed to his throwing problems along with his later finger injury. If he’s free from injuries coupled with his new fitness program, then Teahen’s 2nd year with the Sox could show the same improvement that Rios did after Rios got adjusted to playing with a contender. I believe Teahen deserves another shot.

      • I probably should back up my Morel opinion with some Morel stats:

        2010
        AA—–BB% 6.4%—–SO% 19.6%—–BABIP .385
        AAA—-BB% 4.0 %—-SO% 16.3%—–BABIP .363

His BABIP is not sustainable at the ML level. And he strikes out 3x or 4x times more than he walks. In fact, his BB% has decreased every year from 8.5% in 2008 Rookie ball to 4.0% in 2010 AAA. You would expect a hitter’s walk total would increase with each additional year of experience. Plus he’s not a power guy. Once ML pitchers get a book on this guy…..

        • yeah, morel’s BB% is getting uglier and uglier. too bad mcpherson can’t be counted on.

          • you really like mcpherson huh. I think that the sox 3b situation is fine as is. buford is convincing me that teahan will be great next year. and morel/vizquel behind him will be good.
