White Sox working on a multiyear year deal for LHP John Danks [UPDATE]

Padilla @ ESPN:

The Chicago White Sox have pushed John Danks near the top of their offseason priorities.

According to a source, the team is trying to work a multiyear contract for the left-handed starter into their budget. So while negotiating with free agent Paul Konerko lies ahead, as well as deciding whether or not to bring back A.J. Pierzynski, not to mention retooling the bullpen, it will all be done with an eye toward Danks.

The 24-year-old still has two more years of arbitration-eligible status, but the desire is to lock him in at least through his first free-agent year in 2013. That would require a minimum three-year deal, but a four-year pact is more desirable, according to the source.

Padilla speculates that something in the $20 million range might be enough for a 4 year contract. Aaron Gleeman thinks a 4 year deal would require something around $30 million.

Padilla also  says the Sox are discussing to keep their young core of John Danks, Alexei Ramirez, Gordon Beckham together. Other young players who could join that core are Sergio Santos, Dayan Viciedo, and Chris Sale.

UPDATE: MLBTR agrees with Gleeman and explains why teams have interest in locking up young starters like Danks.

A.J. Pierzynski won’t be re-signing with the White Sox before Sunday

Merkin @ CWS:

A chance still exists for A.J. Pierzynski to be working with White Sox pitchers at Camelback Ranch just after Valentine’s Day, returning to this familiar place for a seventh season as the franchise’s starting backstop. But any sort of new deal definitely will not be arrived at before the exclusive five-day negotiating period between both sides following the World Series expires on Saturday.

“We both agreed to let things play out and take it from there,” Pierzynski told MLB.com from his Florida home on Thursday. “We both agreed to talk again, and I’m sure we will. “The door has not been shut by me or by them. There are no hard feelings from me toward them, and I hope there’s none from them toward me. Something still could be done, but if not, hopefully there’s another team who will want me.” …

Eduardo Escobar, SS, White Sox (AFL Saguaros): 4-for-5, 2 2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI. One of the better fielding shortstops in the minors has made six errors already in AFL; if this is a real offensive step forward, he’s one of the best prospects in the system.

Reifert:

Farmhands Anthony Carter (RHP), Eduardo Escobar (INF) and Jared Mitchell (OF) named to AFL Rising Stars All-Star Game roster.

Mayo @ MLB:

This year’s version of the Rising Stars Game, edition No. 5, will take place this Saturday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. Arizona time (6:06 first pitch) at Surprise Stadium. And if last year’s game is any indication, any baseball fan worth his or her salt will either head to Arizona or tune in to find out what the big leagues will look like in 2011.

For the second straight year, the game will be streamed on MLB.com and shown on MLB Network. Anyone watching will see at least one Major League prospect and many former first-round picks — from all 30 big league organizations. The teams will be split into the two AFL divisions — East and West. Tickets for the game are just $6 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and youth (17 and under). They will be available at the Surprise Stadium box office beginning at 5 p.m. It’s open seating, so it’s first-come, first-served in terms of where a fan catches all of the action.

UPDATE: The broadcast will be free:

Some of Major League Baseball’s top prospects will be featured in Arizona Fall League matchups on MLB Network and MLB.com. MLB Network’s Dave Valle and Daron Sutton, who calls play-by-play for the Arizona Diamondbacks, will call the fifth annual Rising Stars Game on Saturday, November 6 at 9:00 p.m. ET at Surprise Stadium. Valle will be joined by MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger in the broadcast both for the 19th annual AFL Championship game on Saturday, November 20 at 3:00 p.m. ET live from Scottsdale Stadium. MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, will co-produce and provide free live and on-demand video streams of the two games.

Merkin @ CWS (Press Release):

On Tuesday, the first of five days during which teams have to negotiate exclusively with their own free agents, [Omar] Vizquel returned to the White Sox via a one-year, $1.75-million contract. The expectation for the 11-time Gold Glove Award winner is that he will fulfill the role originally intended for him, as the primary backup to shortstop Alexei Ramirez and second baseman Gordon Beckham.
