Arizona interested in J.J. Putz

Gonzo:

Multiple National League sources said the Diamondbacks have interest in Sox free agent reliever J.J. Putz. The Diamondbacks could have an advantage because Putz, who had a 2.83 ERA in 60 games and limited opponents to a .204 batting average last season, resides in the northwest suburb of Peoria. …

Putz is a Type-B free-agent, so if the Sox offer him arbitration and he declines and then signs with Arizona, the Sox get a supplemental first round draft pick. Though, I’d like the Sox to re-sign Putz.

yet another Escobar’s defense is very good report:

Shortstop Eduardo Escobar (White Sox) didn’t do anything at the plate but looked good in the field. No single play stood out; he just seemed to get to grounders without exerting much effort. You’d look up and the play was done. Then you’d look back at where he started and think, huh.

Colorado inquires about Gavin Floyd

Renck @ DP:

The Rockies have broadened their scope in attempt to land a right-handed bat and starting pitcher, inquiring about Arizona outfielder Justin Upton and White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd, according to multiple major league sources.

… Interest in Floyd, a reliable innings eater who’s under contract through 2012, is tied directly to the Rockies’ dwindling chances of keeping free agent Jorge De La Rosa.

… The White Sox are looking for offense, and asked about the Rockies’ Ian Stewart, a third baseman. He’s no longer off limits, but the Rockies don’t have a third baseman to replace him.

Colorado is interested in various third baseman.

Levine @ ESPN:

The Chicago White Sox have signed free-agent right-handed pitcher Brian Bruney and infielder Dallas McPherson to minor-league contracts with invitations to major-league spring training, according to two agents. Bruney pitched for the Washington Nationals in 2010, and he was a reliever on the 2009 world champion New York Yankees. McPherson was a No. 1 pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Philadelphia Phillies interested in Carlos Quentin? [UPDATE]

Stark @ ESPN:

All you need to know is that they continue to explore numerous options for replacing Werth. They’ve done what one source described as “extensive” groundwork on a potential deal for the White Sox’s Carlos Quentin. They remain interested in Jeff Francoeur to play against left-handers. And while they have mild interest in Jermaine Dye, that appears to be on just a back-burner, spring-training-invite level.

UPDATE: The Sox say they are not shopping Quentin:

On Wednesday ESPN.com Jayson Stark reported the White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies have been talking about a trade that would send Carlos Quentin to Philadelphia. A White Sox source told ESPNChicago.com that the Sox are not shopping Quentin at this time.

Well, Stark didn’t claim that the Sox were shopping Quentin.

UPDATE: Gonzo adds another name:

According to sources, the Sox are exploring contract offers to [Hideki] Matsui and possibly Johnny Damon but are not at the point of making offers to anyone. They are likely to hold off until next month on any such moves, as the Dec. 2 non-tender date will send more free agents onto the market.

Reinsdorf confirms asking Florida for a player to give them Ozzie Guillen

Wittenmyer @ CST:

Reinsdorf, in Orlando on the eve of owners meetings, … confirmed for the first time a Sun-Times report last month that he was willing to let the Florida Marlins interview Guillen for their manager vacancy in exchange for a high-level player.

”The Marlins asked for permission to talk to Ozzie, and we told them we’d let Ozzie go if they gave us a particular player,” Reinsdorf told the Sun-Times. ”But we knew they couldn’t give us the player.”

Sources told the Sun-Times the player was touted young slugger Mike Stanton, but Reinsdorf said it wasn’t Stanton. He declined to identify the player, but speculation points to first baseman Logan Morrison.

”We were never going to let Ozzie go, but if they would have given us this particular player,” he said, ”I would have let anybody go. … Everybody is available at a price. The only player I had that wasn’t available was Michael Jordan.”

Don’t miss the last line!

UPDATE: Buford nailed it in his October 29 comment:

Here’s the key sentence in KW’s response “That’s tampering. All I can say is the report isn’t COMPLETELY accurate.” This leads to the obvious question “Which part of the report is accurate and which part is not?” I would think the following is true (1) the Marlins want Guillen and (2) the Sox will let Guillen go, but only if compensated. The Stanton give-up may be the inaccuracy, but other players may also have been discussed.

With the Sox need for LHH and Konerko’s possible departure, Florida 1B prospect Logan Morrison would be a wonderful addition.

Kenny Williams meets with Adam Dunn’s agent

Levine @ ESPN:

Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams met with Adam Dunn‘s agent in preliminary discussions on what Dunn is expecting in free agency this offseason, according to a major league source. The 31-year-old Dunn averaged 40 homers and 100 RBIs the past seven seasons. Numerous teams, including Washington where Dunn spent the past two seasons, are interested in the left-handed slugger.

One major league general manager told ESPNChicago.com that the starting point for Dunn will be a three-year, $40-million deal. …

Rosenthal said Dunn might accept a move to DH:

Dunn’s made clear his distaste for a designated hitter’s role, but he isn’t about to rule out AL clubs, who comprise nearly one-half of his market. He could seek a longer term in exchange for accepting full-time DH duty.

Kenny Williams says Jake Peavy is ahead of schedule but…

Muskat @ CWS:

Chicago general manager Ken Williams says pitcher Jake Peavy is ahead of schedule in his rehab, but the White Sox are not counting on the right-hander to be ready by Opening Day or even the first month. Peavy suffered a detached latissimus dorsi muscle near his right shoulder in early July. “He’s well ahead of schedule,” Williams said Tuesday, “but I don’t want to count eggs before they’re hatched.”

… Despite the injury, Williams said the White Sox head into 2011 with pitching depth. Asked if he expected to acquire another starter, Williams said the team has six now and would add another depending “on how much we want to shake it up.”

… “Whether his time will be now or later will be dependent on what’s available in the free-agent market,” Williams said.

Florida Marlins interested in A.J. Pierzynski

Gonzales @ CT:

Free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski and Florida have mutual interest, according to the Palm Beach Post. But the Post also stated the $6.75 million salary Pierzynski earned last year could raise caution among Marlins officials, who are contemplating the future of slugger Dan Uggla.

Well, if you give us Mike Stanton we’ll pick up A.J.’s salary. Hey, I think you were interested in Ozzie Guillen. We can throw him in too. How could you say no to that? (more…)

2011 White Sox payroll expected to be $105-110 million

Levine @ ESPN:

The White Sox expect to have a budget between $105-$110 million. General manager Ken Williams already has $80 million committed to 10 players. That list includes Bobby Jenks, John Danks and Carlos Quentin, who all will be eligible for arbitration.

BTW, the deadline for a club to offer arbitration is next Tuesday (November 23) and the deadline for a player to accept is one week after (November 30). Bruce Levine reminds us a club can re-sign a player it didn’t offer arbitration to.
