Kevin Goldstein: Eduardo Escobar is the real deal

Goldstein @ BP:

Eduardo Escobar, SS, White Sox (AFL: Saguaros): 2-for-3, HR (3), 2 R, 2 RBI.

Shortstop prospects who really are shortstops are a rarity, and it’s surprising the Escobar doesn’t warrant more attention. The 21 year-old Venezuelan has above-average range and a plus-plus arm, and his bat started to show some signs of life in 2010, as Escobar showed a surprising ability to drive balls into the gap. In a system desperate for prospects, as a good defender with some offensive value, Escobar is the real deal.

and from Phil Rogers:

Reports from the Arizona Fall League on rehabbing White Sox prospect Jared Mitchell are mixed, at best. He has been healthy enough to play, which is the best sign, but the torn tendon in his ankle does appear to be impacting his play. Through Tuesday he was batting .184 in 11 games, and had struck out in 11 of his 38 at-bats. Any impact on Mitchell‘s speed is a bad thing, as the ability to get on base and create havoc made him projectable as a leadoff man, but he has shown that speed only once so far, on a triple. He’s 0-for-1 on stolen-base attempts. Shortstop Eduardo Escobar, on the other hand, is looking great in the AFL. He’s a switch hitter with strong fielding skills and he’s hitting .333 with three homers in 12 games.

Merkin @ CWS:

The White Sox have exercised the 2011 club options on catcher Ramon Castro and left-handed reliever Scott Matt Thornton and released right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres so he can pursue a job in Asia, the club announced Tuesday.

Castro will earn a base salary of $1.2 million, Thornton a base of $3 million.

$3 million for Scott Thornton? I don’t know about that…

Kenny Williams indeed kicked the tires on Cliff Lee in July

Geoff Baker talked with Seattle Mariners team president Chuck Armstrong:

“I went home Thursday night, thinking we had a deal with the Yankees,” Armstrong said. “Pending an exchange of the physical information of the players involved. The next morning, when we got into the details of the physicals of the players involved, one of the players that was coming to us from the Yankees was disabled, and based upon the best medical information that our team medical director, Edward Khalfayan, had, he recommended that we not proceed. Jack (Zduriencik) and his people then spent some time with the Yankees trying to come up with an alternative player, or players, to replace that player. Or even players to be named later. If we could come up with that. In the meantime, other clubs became involved. The White Sox, Minnesota and Texas to name a few.”

So, Larry Stone heard correctly. Same for Ken Rosenthal. And, if you think Seattle asked for Gordon Beckham you are correct!

UPDATE: Tim Brown (Yahoo) says Cliff Lee might be a Kenny Williams target again in the off-season. Other possible Kenny Williams targets: Prince Fielder, Rafael Soriano, Matt Kemp.

Rick Hahn is no longer a candidate of the NY Mets GM job

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ October 22, 2010 2:39 pm

MLBTR:

The Mets announced that they’re bringing GM candidates Josh Byrnes and Sandy Alderson back for a final round of interviews, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com (on Twitter). Byrnes, the D’Backs GM from 2005 to 2010, and Alderson, the A’s GM from 1983 to 1997, both have experience running big league teams. …

UPDATE: Waldstein @ NYT:

Not surprisingly, none of the assistant general managers who were interviewed, including Rick Hahn of the White Sox, Logan White of the Dodgers and Dana Brown of the Blue Jays, were invited back. The Mets are fond of [Mets Assistant GM John] Ricco and were not prepared to insult him by hiring an assistant from another team without considering him for the job. Ricco could eventually be in line to take over from the next G.M.

White Sox organizational All-Stars

MiLB.com:

Right-handed starting pitcher — Terry Doyle, Kannapolis (seven games), Winston-Salem (20 games): Doyle grew up in Red Sox Nation, but he’s made a nice transition to the Pale Hose. The 6-foot-4 righty went 12-10 with a 2.94 ERA and an organizational-best 157 strikeouts in 168 1/3 innings between two levels. Only Chicago’s John Danks (162) had more strikeouts in 2010.

“He’s a tremendous competitor, he competes his butt off,” said McEwing. “He wants the ball until the end of the ninth. He’s able to mix four pitches for strikes at any time and able to locate to all four pitches — it’s one of the biggest assets he’s got. He competes at a high level and is able to throw four pitches at any time.”

The Boston College product was especially nasty at Class A, going 4-2 with a 0.96 ERA in seven starts. He features a fastball, curve, change and a cutter-slider, throwing his heater in the 89-91 mph range with good control. He was promoted mid-season and earned Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors June 7.

“He’s very polished,” said McEwing, who helped the Mets reach the World Series in 2000. “He almost had a big league season with about 180 innings, and he did an outstanding job. He wants the ball, he doesn’t want to come out of the game. You wish you had five starters like that every day.”

and Greg Walker on Tyler Flowers:

“He’s a tremendously talented kid that is trying to correct some swing problems and some approach flaws, in my mind,” White Sox hitting coach Greg Walker said of Flowers to MLB.com. “I’m still confident he’s on the right track, but this winter is important to him.”

Walker is also tweaking Morel’s swing:

“There are a few things we are tweaking with his swing. He’s still got a few misses that we are looking to iron out this winter, but he can be a productive offensive player. The more efficient he becomes with his legs and swing, the more pop you will see,” Walker said. “Every time I see him, it’s a little better. His swing and offensive game [are] evolving. He’s working on some things, nothing major, just minor things to iron out.”

More on Josh Phegley

Filed under: Chicago White Sox — The Wizard @ October 21, 2010 9:32 pm
Tags: ,

Merkin @ CWS:

Phegley, who turns 23 in February, played in just 48 Minor League games for Bristol, Class A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham during this past season. The 5-foot-10, 215-pound catcher lost playing time after being diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, or ITP.

This syndrome is an “autoimmune bleeding disorder characterized by the abnormally low levels of blood cells called platelets,” according to WebMD.com. Simply put, a common bruise incurred when Phegley’s platelet count was low could cause life-threatening internal bleeding, because of the platelet’s function in blood clotting.

So, after his symptoms came back in early October, the offseason focus for Phegley suddenly became treating his illness for four solid months, instead of mixing in treatment while he was playing baseball.

“I don’t have to worry about being on the field right now,” said Phegley by phone from his home in Terre Haute, Ind. “I can hit the treatments harder and get after it a little more. I’m hoping to knock it out during the offseason and never deal with it again.”

Although Phegley has been dealing with this condition since the end of Spring Training, he has been told by doctors it could disappear as quickly as it appeared. The symptoms, which don’t cause Phegley pain or fatigue, manifest themselves through little red spots on his body.

Those red spots reappeared on the side of his chest, under his armpit, on the day of the first scheduled AFL contest.

Disappearing sounds good. Wishing it happens.
