The White Sox, frustrated by their inability to land Adam Dunn, made a run at Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez on Friday, but their overtures were rejected, major-league sources say. … The White Sox wanted the Dodgers to pay all but $1 million of Ramirez’s remaining salary and did not offer a player in return, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions. … The Dodgers could keep Ramirez for the same reason, but sources say they are frustrated by his lack of reliability; this is his third trip to the DL this season.
Though the Sox were rejected, Manny makes for an interesting DH target for multiple teams. Ramirez is having a strong year statistically, but he was otherworldly after the ’08 trade to the Dodgers. Obstacles abound: Manny has a full no-trade clause, he’s on a rehab assignment for a calf strain, and he has over $7MM remaining on his contract (much of it deferred). The contract makes Ramirez an August trade candidate, if the Dodgers feel they can spare him.
UPDATE: Rosenthal (FS):
It’s a halfcourt shot, but it’s still in the air: Source says White Sox intend to make one more run at Manny today.
Manny market heating up. Sources: Three teams have called Dodgers about him — White Sox, Rays and mystery club. Dodgers are considering.
UPDATE #2: Heyman (SI):
manny appears amenable to going to the chisox. but the dodgers want big prospects back.
dodgers asked chisox for [dayan] viciedo for manny
UPDATE #3: Multiple sources say it seems to be over:
chisox, dodgers far apart on manny. doesnt look likely.
The White Sox have yet to even hear a counter-offer from Dodgers on Manny, let alone engage in talks. WS moving on.
Manny deal is dead, and now you can bury it next to the Dunn deal, which was taken off life support yesterday … mouth-to-mouth anyone?
Great coverage of this btw, i’ve been mashing F5 on your site for the past 2 days. I appreciate your work.
