“We are trying to transition him back to the basics to get back to where he was last season….Too many thoughts, you just can’t play [the game that way].”
On his offense
“We think the world of him offensively. Very intelligent kid.”
Peavy’s bread-and-butter has and always will be his fastball and slider with a cutter mixed in at about the same rate as his slider. Those pitches are what elevated him to “ace” status in San Diego, they’re what won him the Cy Young in 2007, and they’re why the Sox organization and fans were so excited to get Peavy last July.
What’s interesting, though, is that Peavy got away from his main three pitches Monday night in Toronto. …
“He had command of his curveball, his changeup, and I didn’t see too many cutters, sliders, but he had command of those two pitches,” Gordon Beckham said. “And he could throw his fastballs for strikes. You know, you’ve got to tip your hat. He was good tonight, he was real good.”
Though Romero had excellent stuff today, so Gordon gets a pass.
