Here’s Ozzie Guillen:

“It’s something you keep pushing and hoping for him but nothing works. Jose is going to be in the bullpen and I don’t know who is starting in his spot [Saturday]. We are in the position right now where we can’t continue to handle guys and hope they get it done. I think enough is enough.  I feel for him, but our job is to win games and not to do people favors. We cannot handle this anymore.”

Here’s Don Cooper:

“If (Peavy) says he’s ready to give us five, six, seven (innings), that might be enough in Kenny’s mind,” said Cooper, referring to general manager Ken Williams. “But if he can’t say that, we’ll have to go for someone else.”

BTW, Jose on his demotion:

“I understand perfectly,” Contreras said.

Jake Peavy: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 1 W

Boxscore:

Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Peavy, J (W, 1-1) 5.0 4 0 0 2 3 0 2.25
Hernandez, F 2.0 3 1 1 2 2 0 1.80

Peavy threw 52 of his 80 pitches for strikes at his 3rd minor-league rehab start.

Gregor says give him another minor-league start and let him debut at Sept. 4 against Boston, but don’t be surprised if he starts Saturday (or Sunday) in New York against the Yankees.

DeLuca says Peavy’s velocity topped at 94mph, and he took a line-drive to his elbow but it only nicked him. DeLuca, also, says Peavy will petition to start Saturday in New York.

Don Cooper says the decision is Peavy’s.

I think a much debated topic this season has been the performance of John Shelby III. Many have been disappointed, which is understandable. I have been a fan of his since he was at Kentucky, so I was looking forward to seeing him play this year. His numbers this year have taken an obvious dip, but the two most significant factors that have caused that are the vastness of Regions Park and his batting average. Although he did hit a 408 foot home run to dead center the other day to lead off the game. My only concern though is his average. …

THT on Gavin Floyd and John Danks

Troy Patterson:

Gavin Floyd was a potential bust in 2009 due to ratios that didn’t match his numbers through last season. He has regressed, but not nearly to his FIP or xFIP. John Danks had also beaten is FIP and xFIP, but with a strong K/BB and average groundball rates he seemed to be the better choice in 2009. Looking at the numbers they have been almost the same.

              IP ERA W K K/9 K/BB HR/F BABIP LOB% xFIP
Gavin Floyd 157.7 3.94 10 134 7.65 2.53 9.60% 0.295 69.10% 3.83
John Danks 141 3.96 10 116 7.40 2.27 9.80% 0.295 73.20% 4.42
