I was the only reporter this afternoon watching pitcher Jake Peavy throw his side session. Peavy threw 52 pitches to live batters using his whole repotoire of ptiches. Pitching coach Don cooper told me that if everything works out well for Peavy, he’ll make his first start in the minor leagues on Thursday, most likely at Triple-A Charlotte.
UPDATE: More Levine:
From my observations, Peavy seemed to have good life on his fastball, but better command on his breaking pitches. I asked Cooper what’s next for the Sox’s $56 million man. “We’re not going to rush this one,” Cooper said. “I’m very encouraged by his outing. I feel good about it. Right now, I’d say his stuff is a 6 out of 10.”
UPDATE #2: Merkin confirms it will be Thursday.
